ABOUT WOOL N' SPINNING //
Starting in the Spring 2014, after my second child was born, I felt this need to talk about spinning, making yarn and just doing things more intentionally than I had before. This need to have this conversation and be surrounded by others who were compelled to make drove me to start talking to a camera on my laptop. It grew and a community started to come together. I decided to publish a Patreon campaign to support the show in June 2016 and here we are today. Thank you for being here. I appreciate your time spent here in this place with me. I hope you feel most welcome because you are welcome.

I appreciate you sharing your moth story. I ended up with them last year (largely because I have cats and am an awful housecleaner, I think!). Didn't lose much fiber, thankfully, but I felt like the worst fiber artist ever. Given my animals and their fur getting into all sorts of odd places that I don't even think to clean, I suspect I will be in "management" mode for...maybe the rest of my life 😛

My default method of spinning is somewhere between long-drawn and continuous back.

My first wheel was a CPW with only 1 working whorl (the other groove threw the driveband), which I believe was 20:1.

I made my driveband as loose as I could still spin with and went with that; it was the only way I could keep up with her, haha.

Now, even with a Majacraft Rose with Scotch tension and a bunch of ratios, I still leave my brakeband pretty loose.

I've never had anyone else spin on my wheel (or spun on anyone else's) so it's never occurred to me that my brakeband might be loose by others' standards, lol.

It's funny the things you never think about when you're entirely self-taught.

I'm still so far behind and trying to catch up, but just wanted to pop up and say how much I enjoyed this episode. I've just been gifted some yak and have never spun it before and was wondering what to do with it, so it will definitely go on my support spindles. I also recently spun up a braid of whitefaced woodland and really enjoyed it. I will look forward to catching up with the next spidoe to see how yours turned out. Loved the discussion about tension on your wheel. I have a Haldane shetland treadle wheel, one whorl, two ratios (I'm not even sure what the ratios are) but if I want to spine fine, I have to work quite a few treadles to get a good amount of twist in to my fibre to hold it together so keep the tension low so the fibre doesn't run on to the bobbin too quickly. And the same with my ashford espinner, I pretty much keep no tension on the break band for that, I think I must be quite slow with my hands so if I have any more than minimal tension I feel like I don't have time to draft my fibre before the bobbin is trying to steal it away, haha!!
