This will do as much to protect children as removing the dislike button protects the platform

When ever a bill is called something like the "Save the puppies and kids bill" they are always dystopian nightmares.

First it was fighting "terrorism" and now it's "protecting children". They're just looking for the next excuse if you ask me

Don't teach kids about bad things, instead just never let them see it.
Great job, we are once again regressing. The failures of parenting never stop failing.

The interesting result from caring deeply about prohibiting kids from doing something is that they generally just get more motivated to do exactly what you don't want them to do

instead of teaching kids about things at a young age let's just completely shelter and hide it from them until they turn 18, cant see what would go wrong

The one thing that always disgusts me to such an extent is the fact that they always hide behind reasons like these.
"Why are you introducing ID verification on more websites?"
"To protect children, of course, not to gather and sell more of your data"

"Why are you removing the dislike button?"
"To protect small creators, not large organisations and corporations"
These people know full well that they are doing, it almost feels like they're insulting your intelligence by telling you these explanations.

These fucking bills never did anything to actually protect children. Due to COPPA, in order for my little sister to play on a Minecraft Realms server with friends she knows in real life, she must get her parents to sign a document giving their permission for Mojang to collect information from her, scan it, and email it to them. But she can join a public server full of nazis and pornographic map art with no issues whatsoever. Great job, legislators. You did the exact opposite of protecting children!

Yo, here's a completely radical idea:
What if parents... like actually monitored what their children do? They can then intervene if the kids are doing something they shouldn't. We can call it parenting or something like that

“Protecting children” online has never worked out well

Imagine we all have to keep our house doors and bedroom doors open so the police can come in and make sure that no one is conducting sexual misconduct.

Any time you hear a politician say "for the children" or "to keep you safe" or "to combat extremism" it should be setting off alarm bells in your head.

'Child Protection' is just a ruse for increased surveillance. Children and the internet have always been a controversial talking point because on one hand, subjectively, there should be no 'filter' to what people can access on the internet no matter the age but at the same time should children really even be spending a lot of time on the internet, *especially* social media? idk just a few thoughts. Great video once again, Luke.

As someone who was groomed online at a young age and experienced some awful things, *this is not the answer.* All this does is change who's abusing who. You cannot violate the privacy of literally everyone because it _might_ help a few.

Personally, I feel like parents should just educate kids on how to use the internet, and avoid bad stuff. (with proper limits of course)

Something I've noticed with stuff like this is the more emotional appeal politicians use to pass a bill, the more shady it actually is. "Think of the children" will always be an excuse by politicians to mess everything up further.

we have to turn the internet so child-friendly that purble place seems like one of the most adult games possible

I read the bill, and in the definitions it says:
"The term “covered platform” means a commercial software application or electronic service that connects to the internet and that is used, or is reasonably likely to be used, by a minor."
Which means EVERY APPLICATION IN EXISTENCE that connects to the internet HAS to have parental controls. Meaning your network manager, your internet browser, and even some random daemon running all have to have parental controls under this bill. That's the power of a vague definition.

As a kid, I agree that this is really an overreach of government. Thank you for bringing it to light.

In the name of protecting children is the new "in the interest of national security" which is another age-old cry of the oppressor.
