I disagree with the idea that you shouldn't film the police. I 100% always recommend people film any interaction with a police officer because more times than not, they will act professional when they realize they are being recorded and there are endless examples of cops that change from acting like a pig to acting like a police officer should once they realize their face Will be the next YouTube sensation of police misconduct.

I have a dashboard mount for my phone that allows me to position the phone in such a way as to record the interaction without "putting the camera in the face of the officer". I get annoyed with the expression "in my face". Holding a camera 3 feet away from a person is in no way jamming a camera in their face. It's a First Amendment right. Exercising your Constitutional rights should not be justification for deeming someone suspicious or deserving of retaliation. Make it less odd by doing it. No honest cop will suffer from being recorded.

It isn't uncommon or unusual, they also have a responsibility to be professional and not get agitated by someone recording them. You're claim that it "sets the wrong tone" is asinine. This is bad advice. ALWAYS RECORD WITH AUDIO AND VISUAL.
