Eurovision Song Contest 2006 - HD Cut - Full Show

On Saturday 31 July at 21:00 CEST, a never-seen-before HD (high definition) cut of the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 held in Athens will be broadcast for the first time.

This high definition footage was filmed as part of a research experiment carried out by the European Broadcasting Union, ERT, the Institute for Broadcasting Technology in Munich and the research and development laboratories of Rai and the BBC.

It was never intended to be broadcast.


Many aspects of this high definition cut differ from the definitive version of the 51st Eurovision Song Contest that was broadcast live from Athens on Saturday 20 May, 2006.

We’re excited to share this experimental HD footage with you for reference. It is not intended to replace the original show which will be uploaded to the Eurovision YouTube Channel soon.

I think it is worth taking to a moment to acknowledge how far technology has come in the last fifteen years. In 2006, HD was still a long way away for most of Europe. Now most of us are able to stream this over the internet in full HD!

When I was a child, I didn't recognize the beauty of Lejla. Took me many years to realize it is one of the best songs in the history of the contest. Would've been a deserving winner any other year.

This is the first Eurovison i watched in my life, I was changing the channels and suddenly I saw a very attractive and young Dima Bilan singing.... and since then I became a big Eurovision fan!. Greetings from Colombia!

Now this gives me nostalgia... I was 7 years old as this came out, it was the first ever Eurovision I ever watched, and I watched as everyone was saying that Finland will win (note, I am a Finn myself), and I believed it. I just didn't know or understand what we would win, but we would win, and we did. I have watched every Eurovision Song Contest ever since, never missed one. I am glad to look back at this now at the age of 22. How time flies, but at least it has flown with the company of the lovely music in Eurovision
