Miss Anthropocene is an art project by Grimes in which a new pantheon of modern Gods exist as humanoid versions of the concepts that dominate our lives, such as Climate Change, plastic, biological warfare, social media, etc. In the 21st century, these ideas have replaced the old pagan Gods and concepts.

In the song New Gods, the question is posed as to whether we need new gods to survive as a species.

This song perfectly explains with words, vibes, and visuals what it is like to go through sobriety as a recovering addict. I have a framed photo of a still from this video hanging on my wall which reminds me every day to search for “new gods.” Not literally, but when you are in the throes of active addiction, your drug of choice is your god and nothing else matters. But it’s like worshipping something evil - because it is. It will only ever hurt you. Even though living in this new sober world feels painful and impossible, I know I have to look for “new gods” in the every day things that bring me joy, like my husband, my beautiful puppy, my sisters who are my best friends, the sun shining, the rain falling, the cool breeze right before the sun goes down for the day, the food on my plate, the job I have to go to… these are the gods I should be worshipping. Not drugs.

Dude, listening to this song during the pandemic, at night, driving through the empty streets, especially during lockdown and curfew, it was surreal. The slowed and reverbed version too.

Wish I discovered Grimes sooner, her music would've helped me heal in my teenage years. But now it feels like a reward for hanging on. It's ethereal, moving, and cryptic. I feel like it is the audio version of a magic image; if you have a certain understanding it will move you without even trying. Thanks Grimes. <3

I'm sure many have noticed this but if you remember in her previous song "delete forever" she was sitting in the same throne and the planet was beautiful and full of color. Now, the planet is destroyed and it has no color.

Edit: I realized this song is 2-3 years of old and this is just the mv of it but I think it still has something to do with her break up but idk I could 100% be wrong

Delete Forever is about loss and New Gods seems to be about the different ways people find meaning in coping with grief and emptiness. As rich or famous as Grimes gets, she has shown no signs of missing a beat in her artistry.
