he's the only character wearing 'default' armor which I think just reinforces this idea in a meta sense. If I play a warlock Wyll and the MC are dressed the same, not even a pallet swap. Which makes him feel boring and unassuming, but at the same time he's now more marked by his class than any other origin character.

I think his "boring" look is intentional in universe aswell! His father is famous in baldur's gate, and as such he wishes to distinguish himself by, ironically, staying bland. He wants to be a part of the people and so, he dresses as such.

Moment met Wyll immediately thought "wow, this is a funny lil guy. Youre going to be my best friend now." Like dude literally hits you with a rehearsed line like a meme then just starts slaughtering goblins like he's him. Then the mans nice to the point where if he leaves the party in a evil playthrough he just sounds disappointed that youre becoming a villain and before that point dude trys to offer you advice to be a hero to steer you from the dark path. Bro, when he introduced himself with the dumbest, most rehearsed line ever (like he thinks he's cool or is trying too hard to be), I rolled my eyes so hard and was all to happy to annoy him in dialogue- and then he turned on the real charm after he got interesting and bro... I need to romance this man in my next playthrough

what i love about all the characters in bg3 is that all of them are the antithesis of what their class should be, gale is a wizard that needs to consume magic rather than control it. astarion is a rogue but he's the oposite of the brooding edgy rogue and falls more in the category of bard, karlach rather than the fight hungry rage filled barbarian is an open energetic person who is just sick of fighting because she was stuck in combat all her life. shadowheart being a cleric of an evil god, and wyll a warlock but instead of being power/knowledge hungry he's more like a paladin, and minthara is an evil drow paladin

Wyll's scarring and eye are VERY interesting. the fact that the pupil of his fake eye is a heart... and the scarring on his face looks like a violent caress. Like something with claws cooed and traced his features lovingly while also hurting him.

I love that wyll actually gets patron interaction as opposed to custom warlocks

rapiers are also more a nobility weapon, a gentleman duelist not rugged frontiersman who would be almost expected to have an axe

Moment I saw him in action, i fell in love. He's magic Zorro. He's so cool, and anyone who thinks he's boring are too preoccupied with being "unique and mature" or have to take a chill pill. Being just a cool guy is perfectly valid characterization.

Wyll's character is great because it does what so many players & DMs don't do: it make the fact that he is a Warlock, a person who has effectively sold their soul to a being of great power, mean something & explores what the ramifications of such a deal might entail. Too many tables treat it as 'the Eldritch Blast/Hexblade dip' and leave it at that.

I think, in a way, dressing more casual let's him be more connected to the everyday person that he rescues.

i think seeing wyll be so caring for the tiefling children made me absolutely love him and no matter what his character kept getting so much better from all his development.

Wyll is too kind of a guy for his own good. Even though he is trapped in a pact with a devil that has manipulated and disfigured him, he still doesnt regret his choices because he knows that he did what he did for the sake of protecting others.
