Although the integration and use of renewable energy has increased dramatically, it has mainly occurred in the electricity sector by replacing the use of fossil fuels for electricity generation with renewable electricity. Such progress has not yet been achieved in all sectors and primary energy supply is still predominantly fossil-based.
Sector Coupling refers to the interconnection and integration of the energy demand sectors with the power supply sector. Sector Coupling enables renewable energy to be used across all energy-consuming sectors, including electricity, heating; both in buildings and industry, and transport. Through sector coupling, renewable energy use can be fully utilised, fossil fuel use avoided, emissions reduced, and the greater energy system optimised.
