This is a Kickstarter success too if I'm not mistaken. I remember seeing something like this game on there a while ago pledging to bring back the old school JRPG. Had any money I would have given them some for days but they ended up killing their goal anyway. Good to hear the game turned out well.

Wow... I didn't realize RPG Maker had such a bad name for itself. The only RPG Maker games I've played were all fantastic. It's kind of sad to see so many people not even give this game a chance just because it was made in RPG Maker though. It actually looks really good.

Love that you included some background (lore etc) in the captions. That's a very good way to do it, as those who want that (such as myself) can get it, but the ones that don't aren't forced to sit through it.
It's also nice to see that you're still not turning this into a "games you should try" or "games you might not have heard of" video series by including games that simply do well in some aspect of the execution.

I've said this before elsewhere, but anyone who misses the old PS1-era of JRPGs should check out Ni No Kuni. It's got that sense of adventure and the story's really good without being needlessly overwhelming like some JRPGs can be.
Seriously, it's a really fantastic game.

I'm glad you recommended a game made with RPG Maker. The engine gets a horrible rap because of people who make an overworld, throw monsters on it, and call it a game (my first attempt was sort of like that lol), but there are a bunch of really good things one can do with the engine if you have talented music and art and scripting people.

this game is the King of the RPGmaker games. It is a masterpiece. The music will blow you away. The guys who made this worked their ass off. Its every bit as good as you hope when you watch this video.
Last Dream 2 is coming in august 2015. Being made with the Unity Engine.

Because of this recommendation/review I picked this game up on Steam.  I have since put in about 30 hours in the last month or so.  I agree with everything James has said.  Not a damn thing revolutionary, but it refines everything to a point and my inner RPG child is completely geeking out on the monster hunts, crafting, fishing, and stat system.

The best thing I see from this game is the option to see how many encounters you would like to take. I frankly think that's genius.

Since you opened the RPG maker flood gates, The Last Exile is an amazing game. It is the closest thing I have found to a spiritual successor to Suikoden. The story is compelling, a lot of the characters are endearing and there are a ton of secrets as well. They also have unique magic system.

As soon as I saw the title...oh god, the memories...I remember stumbling across this game in college and being hooked until the end, playing it for weeks to the exclusion of other games. Absolutely amazing.

The classic JRPGs did so many things right, the way the world opens up and allows the players to discover new things on their own, having great pacing - balancing action and rest, having actual character arcs in the story, having story themes... the players drives the plot forward (similar to mass effect in that sense) when they feel like it, rests when they feel like it, explores the world when they feel like it.. it's just a great feeling of freedom when you play those games.. new plot development means new places to go, new items to discover, new challenges to overcome.. so you are motivated to go along with the plot development.
