Diagnosis and treatment are only two potential applications of neuroimaging, and not all scientific studies should be motivated by what can happen in the clinic. Neuroimaging has dramatically increased our knowledge of how the brain is shaped and interconnected both structurally and functionally, and how these attributes vary across individuals and within an individual over time.

Furthermore, the idea that neuroimaging has had no effect in clinical applications is now outdated. Biomarkers for degeneration rate in Alzheimer's disease can be put to use in clinical trials to determine the efficacy of treatment.
