Interesting timing. I just replaced the alternator in my 1996 Dodge Neon on Wednesday. In that instance I went from below, and the worst part was backing off the tensioner adjustment bolt to remove the belt-- in my case the tensioner bolt was in a fairly inaccessible spot behind the alternator splash shield and I could only turn the ratchet 1/8th of a turn at a time. Took forever to release enough tension to get the belt off, I thought something was wrong after the 100th turn....
Glad to see these vids, hope all is well and that we get more soon Eric!

Looks easier than my Hyundai Santa Fe. Looks like I'll be doing my Honda Odyssey this weekend. Thanks for the tips Eric.

Thank you, sir, for the collar adjustment tip @2:43
Able to DIY this job in less than 3 hours. Spend more time fighting the belt and dropping wrenches than removing and installing.

I started manufacturing some discontinued Honda parts, I make a upgraded replacement foam cupholder insert for these vans, the 4th gens. I also make taillight gaskets for 1rst generation Odyssey that help keep water out of the trunk.

It might be too late for you to install my parts on this van, but I'd be happy to send you both the parts I currently make just so you can stock them and have them on hand if you ever have a use for them.

I did one on my wife’s car a couple months ago. The job itself was easy, but because it’s so far down in there with zero room to work, it was actually pretty difficult. At one point, as i was digging it out, i dropped one end of it and it got turned around. For a few minutes, it was completely stuck, upside down and backwards and i thought i was going to have to pull the front of the van off to get it out. I would be lying if i said i didn’t start to panic a little.

I also had to create my own little collar puller out of a 19mm socket, an M8x70 bolt and some big washers to get the collar on the bottom mount out enough to get the new alternator back in.

I also went ahead and swapped out the power steering fluid and serpentine belt while i was in there. A factory Honda belt, of course.

It’s doable, but even i, who has mechanical ability, struggled with it in that tight space.

I had to do this job last winter in the driveway when it was 20 degrees out. That sucked.

Did this twice on my wifes oddessey. Boy, these alternators are expensive and a huge pain to get in and out.

That spool valve is used on quite a few of these vehicles, namely the 08-17 VCM Odysseys, the 08-12 VCM Accords, and the 09-15 Pilots among others. They are all prone to having this leak, resulting in alternator failure. Honda actually has a TSB out for the leak issue there (TSB 20-023) which includes their procedure to fix the leak and make sure it doesn't come back. It involves replacing the upper half of that spool valve along with two gaskets and the metal plate that is sandwiched between those gaskets.
