Absolutely a great house. Sadly so many of these beautiful buildings were demolished to make room for ugly modern buildings. Awesome video.

Zinc made a lot of people wealthy. My great grandparents found zinc on their farm and it afforded them a better life, they built a new outhouse with a regular door on it.

Thank goodness this beauty was saved and not allowed to crumble and fall down like so many others. It’s a true treasure.

I'm glad there seems to be an awakening around historical preservation. These places are works of art we can walk around in!! ❤❤❤

It must’ve been interesting being a later resident, living in the faded glory of your family’s past. I’m really happy the house is still here!

I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it.
Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication.
It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊

What a truly special place this is! The grand staircase leading to the front door was breathtaking. Upon entering the rest of the mansion did not disappoint. The finishes from the floors to the ceilings are stunning! It is so great that it is being well cared for and others can appreciate the beauty and history of the mansion. Thank you.

Glad to know this house is being preserved for tours. Makes no sense to tear such houses down & replace them with ugly modern buildings. Loved the music, and without narration: the photographs speak for themselves. Merry Xmas from California! 😄🧑‍🎄🎄👍

Back when homes were made with true craftsman who appreciate and took pride in their accomplishments and work. Tis the reason why most are still in great functional order. These days, you don't know who or what is building your home...

This is a era home for sure. I can only imagine if those walls could.talk the wonderful experiences it would tell. Beautifully mastered wood work everywhere and one of a kind craftsmanship. I can only.pray they (whoever that might be) decides to restore and bring this grand lady back to its former beauty before it's too late. Thank you so much for showing this eye candy for the soul. They certainly.dont make homes like this anymore.

Imagine all the different craftsman it took to construct such a place? It’s mind blowing. It’s absolutely incredible!!! I would love to see in person.

A very well-done video. It is absolutely amazing that the home stayed in the same family for all of those years. Equally amazing and gratifying is that it remained basically untouched and that it is being preserved! (This situation is very similar to Wilderstein in Rhinebeck, NY, the Suckley home.)

Now THIS is what a house should be! This is equal to any castle in England. It is from an era in our country that will never come again. SO great that it is being saved. This is on my list a mansions to tour!

I like that this has no talking - can enjoy the tour better without unnecessary talking. 😊

Very well done video of a spectacular treasure. But I must comment about the music. This rendition of the Coventry Carol (first song) is by far the most beautiful I’ve heard. Moved me to tears. Thank you.

Oh, it's the Hegeler Carus Foundation that owns the house, maintains it, and manages the tours.

Lovely tribute to this fabulous home. I can't imagine how many servants it took to keep it going. Kudos to those who have been responsible for saving and restoring it. The Google street view is quite good. Thanks!
