Are companies still hiring older workers in 2023? Anecdotal evidence in the form of thousands of Over50tv viewers would answer that question with a resounding HELL NO! But their voices run contrary to an article that was published by the Society of Human Resource Management in March 2022, which claimed that companies are renewing efforts to retain and hire older workers. Now, this organization, which is also known as SHRM, has over 360K members, they're in 165 countries, so you expect that they would have the inside scoop on the job market. But, I'm going to trust our viewers who are the ones feeling the sting of constant rejection.

Thank you Lou for this video. I am an attorney with 26 years experience in equal rights, anti-discrimination and human resources, and ended up out of a job for discriminatory reasons. Looking for a job in those field was not easy because familiarity with new terminology and technology was more important than breadth of knowledge and experience.
Fortunately, a friend introduced me to an attorney about to retire who taught me the basics of real estate transactions. It was exciting learning new things every day and finding my way in the field. Yet this is not the optimal time to start a business for real estate due to the economy.
Now I am starting to look for employment again.

I’ve been unemployed for over 6 months, I’ve 30 years experience within the creative industry as a creative director and it’s almost like I’m totally unemployable because I’m 55 yrs old

Companies are still hiring older workers especially here lately. I am over 50. As stated in one of your last videos, I landed a job as Vice President of Technology last week. It is a great job and I love it. I think one of the main things is that you need to try and stay employed while looking for another job if you sense something bad is coming. Companies kind of look past you if you are unemployed when you are looking for a job. I know some of that is out of our hands. We can’t determine whether or not we are employed or not. There is in fact nothing wrong with you over 50. You are desired for your experience. Being employed while searching for a job has a big impact on whether or not companies look at you. My thoughts anyway.

I'm just going to collect now at 62 and work only temp jobs. Over the corporation jobs, I just want to sit in a corner and shift paperwork back and forth, LOL. I'm still good at computers so data entry here I come. I'll reassess again at 65.

Would older workers be better off applying to government? They are usually under more scrutiny by the public so being accused of ageism is a big deal. They also usually have defined benefit pension plans so it should be cheaper for them to hire older workers that will only develop 10-15 years of retirement benefits.

Unfortunately the job starts with the interview. And HR is usually following a script, and their own bias. If the person doing the interview is under 35 you may as well keep it short and keep looking. People have bias whether they admit it or not.

I'm too cranky to interview with any companies and their moronic HR people at this point. Retirement will be sweet! Lots to do in life, it is short when you hit 60. Side hustle, maybe if needed.
