Shenzhen, the once rural village close to Hong Kong, has benefited from China’s economic reform and opening up policy. It has transformed into one of the country's largest and most modern cities in just 40 years.

Three locals from different generations - Wu Tao, Zhang Donghong and Zhong Yian - talk about growing up in the southern Chinese city.

Respect to Deng Xiaoping. I wish India has more leaders like him.

Shenzhen is very crazy. When I came about 25 years ago, the city was just like in Reno, NV where there is small number of buildings and people but when I came back last year to collect some projects I was amazed on how fast the city growth from Reno, NV to New York City, NY.It was crazy, never seen a city developed so rapidly like Shenzhen. The growth is even faster rather than in Berlin and Hiroshima. But I think about the rising of the cost of living problem, all the city around the world have that and they need to doing it and managed it right before their cities becoming like Hong Kong.Prices there are uncontrollable, crazy!!

I once knew a local middle class. His family property may be worth two or three million RMB then, but usually smoke very cheap cigarettes . He said his family only had grass to eat decades ago. It is already happy to have this.

Guangdong people really should thank Deng Xiaoping

Another good report from SCMP, keep it coming.

I start wondering if there are two branches of SCMP, one is a group of professional reporters covering balanced authentic stories, another group of "journalists" just scrutinize the internet for trash scraps.

The youngest and probably will be the most developed city in China in the near future.

A Cantonese speaker in Shenzhen! This is as unimaginable as it is logical.

I'm not sure sure how I feel about putting baked bao into a steamer... This is weirder than MCJin putting egg rolls in a steamer. You literally have to be in this lady's shoes to naturally do this. Anyone out here or in HK or having a microwave would have just used the microwave. I guess she is doing it for the texture?

I worked in Shenzhen from 2014 to 2015. The pay was so low, only 1k AUD per month. The life was also very boring in Shenzhen, I travelled to HK every month
