What are Basket Trials?

Basket trials are a new type of clinical trial in which a targeted therapy is studied in patients who all have the same mutation, but in different types of cancer. This lets researchers simultaneously figure out which types of patients might benefit from an experimental therapy, or from a drug already approved to treat another cancer. In a basket trial, patients are grouped into different "baskets" based on their type of mutation. Since the patients are pooled from many different cancer types, basket trials help overcome the problem of finding enough patients to run a trial for a rare cancer, or for a cancer with a rare mutation, and testing the effects on many cancers at the same time can help get new treatments to patients faster. It's important to note, however, that not all cancers with the same mutation will respond to the same treatment. That's why the trial is conducted! Ultimately, the goal of a basket trial is to expand treatment options to patients with rare cancers, or for cancers with a rare mutation.
