I am Zimbabwean, so I am really happy when someone recommends nervous conditions. We had to read it in school as it was a set book because she was an old student from my school, which at the time I resented, but as an adult, I appreciate much more. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for recommending it. I feel it's a book that needs more people to read it.

Noli Me Tangere is one of my most favorite novels everrrr! I read it in school and it's been in my head for over 3 decades. It was meant to help spark the revolution, especially the Sisa storyline. She was the personification of the Philippines. I'm so happy you liked it and it made it on the list. El Filibusterismo is also amazing!

I added quite a lot of these to my wishlist. Thanks! And thanks for calling out my favorite Poirot novel, Death on the Nile.

What a fantastic list! You’ve made me want to read more plays this year. Portrait of the Artist as Filipino sounds right up my alley.

I'm so glad you loved Nervous Conditions! It's such an amazing book. I really want to check out The Portrait of the Artist as Filipino now. It sounds like it would be great to see performed.

2024 was a great reading year for me: In the beginning it was impossible to read while recovering from major surgery but somewhere around June or July I began again with a passion! Read my first Faulkner (Absalom, Absalom), the Grapes of Wrath (too morose), Didion's White Album and her instant classic the Year of Magical Thinking, Philip Roth's Plot Against America (currently working on Lewis' It Can't Happen Here), Welles' Time Machine (shocking!), and Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, amongst others. As one would expect, some were more enjoyed than others; some need to be reread, et cetera. Thx Kate

Always inspiring to watch your annual round ups of classics. Lovely to see Nervous Conditions in there.

Jane Eyre was a favorite new read for me in 2024. And Sense and Sensibility, during Jane Austen July, was a favorite re-read.

There isn't a Trollope novel that I haven't enjoyed - which is why I've read more than 20 of them. Looking forward to reading Linda Tressel. Ayala's Angel is in my top three of Trollope novels and is the one that I recommend to people who haven't read Trollope. Truly a great read - I read it several years ago and still think about it. It is wonderful and definitely he does capture unrequited love better than any writer has ever done.
I read Orley Farm and The Struggles of Brown, Jones and Robinson by Trollope this year enjoyed both of course Orley Farm gets better as it goes along as there is a little too much anticipation of the upcoming trial. I think The Struggles of Brown Jones and Robinson, while not a great book was probably a bit more enjoyable as the depiction of Victorian retailers is quite refreshing and in many ways is quite contemporary. It's a short book that could've been longer (or even had a sequel) as the ending definitely piques one's interest as to Robinson's future.

Apart from the Agatha Christie books that I re-read which are my favourite books of all time, my favourite classic this year was Silas Marner.

What such an amazing collection of classics! Choosing my favourite classic is so hard. Evelina is up there, so is Maus, and The Prime Minister. It's just so hard to choose

Agree with everything you said about And Then There Were None. Have always felt it is AC's tip-top and the best whodunit I've experienced. Interestingly the copy I first read was entitled Ten Little Indians, which I never see anymore.
