Hardware vs. Software:This is a comparison of the Strymon Volante with the Soundtoys Echoboy VST Plugin.
Check out if there are sonic differences between a pedal and a VST plugin.
This is the first part (tape emulation) of a series of comparisons of a pedal with a VST plugin. Stay tuned for further parts about digital delays and analog delays.

0:11 tape delay
1:21 drum with multi heads
2:50 tape delay (less low end)
3:45 studio
4:54 drum with modulation
5:47 darker tape with modulation (half speed)

The plugin operates solely in the digital domain. The pedal converts the input signal to digital, dsp is applied, and is converted back to analog on the output. Adjustments like gain and volume don't work the same way as analog. Gain (trim) and digital volume is adjusted by manipulating the bit rate. On the pedal, anything analog is adjusted by varying the signal level. The difference isn't hardware vs software because the pedal also has software. Its more analog vs digital because that's the main difference between the 2. Also, if you compare the vst to a different pedal, you'll get different results.

This is terrific, since I have both and use them both. Thank you!!!! The Soundtoy sounds a little darker in general, but that could be due to any number of factors. I thought I was the only one who liked to use Head 4!

Being the Volante user, I have to admit that the sound difference is negligible. However, having the physical knobs is totally worth the price for me.

For most of them i give the edge slightly to the Volante but there is no way in a mix that any difference could be heard, also there's a decent price difference between them.

I love Echoboy, I have it original, but the volante wheel has incredible depth!

Volante is like frying a real german fat sausage, the sizzle is real vs VST that sounds like burning the frankfurters (well trying to). 🙂In all seriousness, in this example Volante is by far superior sounding. Echoboy sounds flat, plasticky without dimension or juice. But at what sample-rate & bit depth was the VST running, what buffer settings, then inside which DAW, what audio interface, if USB which USB cable etc.... ? Those can all potentially matter a big deal. Great video though, super thanks for doing it @delay dude🤍.

I'm mixing my own music, and today i hooked up the delay as an outboard fx, because i find those plugins unusable for creating dimension..

The comparison is not correct. Volante has 3 different modes: binson, re-201 and echoplex. So you must first select proper type in Echoboy and then tweak it by ear to match the Volante.
Thanks anyway❤

Funny the Nux Tape Core sounds better than the Volante for the first patch. Echoboy can sound awesome but you have to dual it in. Are these your own presets for Echoboy? If so would it be possible to share them?

Plugin sounds just a little less bright, or with less details. But the difference is very small.
