I've always heard it, it is similar to the Orion part, but it's meaty enough through the distortion that it sounds like he's hitting a power chord there and just letting it ring out, very cool undertone beneath Hetfield's God-like picking.

I’ve always thought it was him hitting the low e with the power chord on that part. It sounds so sinister with the bass, but we’ll never know unless we get the stems.

It is just E power chord on the bass (maybe with chorus or other effect/s), mixed with lots of guitar tracks and the final result sounds like the bass is doubling the guitar but it is not. At least, this is what I hear as a bass/guitar player with 18 years of practice. \m/

Actually orion intro is not bass, its distorted hammon organ. Anyway i believe Cliff played organ
