SME Assembly 2024 – Training the Trainers: Carbon Audits

The SME Assembly is the most significant event for European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Hosted by the European Commission and the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the SME Assembly 2024 took place in Budapest from 18-20 November and featured high-level panel discussions and networking opportunities.

The "Train the Trainers: Conducting a Carbon Audit" masterclass addressed the urgent need to equip business organisations with the skills required to support SMEs in their decarbonisation journey. As a key priority under the EU Green Deal agenda, decarbonising the energy system is essential for meeting the EU's 2030 climate objectives and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

This session provided a step-by-step guide to the Carbon Audit process, offering practical tools and resources for business organisations to assist SMEs in overcoming skill and knowledge gaps—identified as the primary barrier to climate action for 63% of small businesses in a 2022 Climate Hub survey. Eelco Kruizinga (Senior Principal Consultant, DNV) and Pamela Jouven (Director, SME Climate Hub, and part of the We Mean Business Coalition) shared actionable insights to empower trainers to guide SMEs in implementing effective decarbonisation strategies.
