I think the stringent water parameters are more for breeding and getting them to grow big. The eggs calcify if the water isn't soft enough. Clean hot water to get them to grow really big. It's easy to keep discus that get to 3 to 5 inches if you want the big 8 inch, then it'll take a lot of work.

If I may add something to the video myself: I've kept discus in the past and the first difficulty that comes to my mind is the act of choosing the fish because bad genetics and bad health conditions lead to illnesses more easily, choose only health fishes with a proper rate of growth (dwarfism is very common in this fish) you Kave have very very good looking fishes 😉

Are discus temperature sensitive? I mean during water changes if the temperature flactuates a bit say 2 degrees will it harm them?

If you have heavily planted or hardscaped tank it can be a challenge with discus. Especially if you feed messy foods. The food gets caught under things and pollutes the water. Remember its not the water that makes the fish sick, its all the stuff that decays and pollutes the water that does

Great video Kev I have 2 discus tanks I do 50 percent water change every other day on both tanks I feed 4-6 times a day I love my discus bro I want a 3rd tank but my wife won’t allow it 😂😂😂😂

I used hma filters cause in NYC water has high metal, kept at the same ph, but to grow out my juvenile discus I would put in 20 gallon and change water everyday that is what the breeders do then move them to bigger tank after and with sickness as long as u don't cross asian with German they probably no problems and they get bladder issuse

I'd like to keep Discus, I just can't justify spending around $80 a fish. And those are the locally tank raised, I can't imagine how expensive wild caught Discus are.
