Hi, I'm so excited you guys are getting into beekeeping. My mother-in-law got me into it, when I caught a swarm from her hive. I think the Lord gave me beekeeping to keep me out of trouble and to give me something to do in my spare time. So what have I learned so far? 1.Well, bees die pretty easily. I lost 80% of my bees last winter. Lesson learned, get locally adapted bees. I actually started catching swarms last spring 2. put the queen-excluder over the brood chamber, otherwise the queen will lay eggs, and you'll have brood in the honey super. 3. Bees multiply really quickly. I went from 2 hives last spring to now 30, last I checked they were all still alive. 4. Plantain (a little herb that grows on the ground) is really good for bee stings, chew it up and rub it on the sting, it will go away in no time. There's like a million other things, bees are incredible creatures. I would let my bees swarm because it helps deal with the varroa mite (bees' worst enemy), half the bees will remain with the new queen in the original hive. Actually I think I had a divinely inspired idea last year of splitting the queen and brood into two different boxes, this gives the bees the brood break they need to reduce the number of the varroa mites. The best book I've read on beekeeping is The Hive and The Honeybee by Lorenzo L. Langstroth, a pastor who lived about 150 years ago but knew a lot about beekeeping.
