That one around the Blue ridge mountains/ Blacksburg VA is written by someone not native to the area. Black bears are common in that area. There are also Moutain Lions, bobcats, and lynx. As well as likely said unidentified creature in the story. I saw some inidentified brown creature too tall to be a deer in the woods in front of my parents house. Never could track it.
