Time to check out the OS from system76 based on Ubuntu 18.04. Pop!_OS is a delightful OS with minimal but meaningful changes made to an otherwise stock GNOME experience.

Achieving a delightful user experience is **NOT** something shallow! Don't ever think in that way and we absolutely have more than enough people thinking in that way in the community already.

If we as a community really want to introduce / attract more people into Linux, we definitely SHOULD provide a good user experience, whether for specific audiences like developer or for the normal users, which of course should include a nice looking interface. I mean... tons of developers use Mac, and you have to admit a good UX is one of the reasons.

When I started out using Linux 2 years ago, I intentionally avoided using stock Ubuntu but instead looked for other distros like ZorinOS and ElementaryOS simply because it looked too ugly. Of course you can tailor it to your own taste, but I am sure most people have something more important to them than tweaking the UI themes for a whole day. We should promote this trend towards more thoughtful and beautiful design alongside the software quality.

Writing this from my ThinkPad T420 on PopOS. It works flawlessly.
Better battery life than distros with XFCE or mate.

RAM is there to be used. The more that can be read/write to RAM the better. I don't know why people want to absolutely minimize its use. Obviously you don't want the OS to get in the way of apps, but if it can dynamically use RAM, that's better than just not using the RAM.

I rather like Pop!_OS. While it's Gnome, it seems to be set up to get out of the way so one can get to work while also not looking bad OOTB so that you're not needing to customize it too much to make things look right for the environment to blend away from your task.

PopOS has pretty good hardware compatibility. I've run various flavors of Ubuntu and Debian on a Dell XPS 15, I think it’s a 9560, and both the graphics and the wireless card have given me trouble. PopOS just runs without any extra tweaking around.

I will try PopOS one day, if for no other reason than to compare it to Manjaro Gnome :) I can honestly say that I've never really liked/respected the Gnome interface much at all until I recently installed Manjaro Gnome. As a user (very much a newbie but also an old fart lol), I have always been mouse driven rather than keyboard driven. You have 'enlightened' me about how Gnome is 'supposed' to be used, but I doubt I will ever change to a keyboard focus at this stage in my life. Manjaro Gnome just works for me, so does Mint Cinnamon lol... and I'm sure many other distros will also 'just' work for me :) Always enjoy your stuff, IG, it's always intelligently thought out and well-presented. Thank you.

With a Lenovo T480S this distro is buttery smooth and battery life is superb.

I've had Pop!_OS installed on an Ancient Dell Optiplex 780 I rescued from scrappage and apart from the odd crash (probably more on the machine side) its been a delight to use! And this comes from someone who struggled to let go of the Windows feel after spending most of my IT life on it.

I agree. If your computer is *not* using your RAM, your computer will feel slower opening some files. Why? Because it's not in RAM. No sense if having your RAM just sit there doing nothing.

Have been using this since it's inception, and in my opinion? THIS is what OTHER Linux distros WISH they could be! It's PERFECT!....nothing blocks your view when giving you notifications, and the colors are mellow and dark theme is excellent, and its FAST! Definitely the one I'll be using for a LONG time (As soon as I'm done saving up for one of their laptops!...LoL!....and I think I'll be getting one of their desktops as well..for gaming and coding!!)
