Sims 4 is an expensive game- especially if you buy all sims 4 dlc/ expansions at full price. But now it's been confirmed that the sims 4 base game will be free in less than a month- and this announcement has caused an uproar of reactions and speculation for what it could mean for gameplay. I’ll give you my honest take- and my speculation about this decision and what the date could mean.

I cover sims 4 news, guides, pack reviews, occasionally mods and cc and the story of sims development.

With how many people are fed up with their broken content and refusing to buy packs, it feels like an attempt to lure in unknowing potential new players.

My thought is a boost for holiday sales considering they have deals during Black Friday and Christmas. So more people will have enough money to buy DLC since the game is free.

Buying The Sims 4 does not even give you a full game due to all the crazy amount of paid DLC. So it's good its going free to play. Good vid! I hope The Sims 5 fixes the greedy mistakes from the Sims 4 and previous games Sims game but knowing EA they probably won't learn sadly hope I'm wrong.

I definitely can't complain because I also got the basegame for free a few years ago when it was free for a limited time. I think it's a smart business decision move because most players have some DLC and don't just play with the basegame. Offering the game for free is a gateway to selling the DLC which isn't free.

I think this is a good move for Sims 4 since the game is getting old. On the other hand, can Sims 3 be free too? Most simmers have already spent a lot of money on it, but it would be nice for anyone who wants to try Sims 3 for the first time. Also, I still don't own the entire Sims Store content yet, although I have a lot of it. LOL

I wasn't really bothered by the base game being made free because they've already made it free a few times already. As someone who paid full price for the game when it came out, I was already burned multiple times, including when they permanently lowered the price of it.
I was mostly glad to get the Oasis Luxe kit for free because I actually wanted it but had zero intentions of giving EA any of my money for now so I snatched that up real fast lol

A kit of one’s choice would have been nicer but that’s looking a gift horse in the mouth, I guess (though I think, looking a gift horse in the mouth actually is a good idea!). Maybe they have some Halloween shenanigans planned with advertisement outside of the game and such. It sounds like a good date to make the most of spooky vibes.

I'm not upset. I wasn't upset when the TS2 Ultimate Collection (Base, all EPs and all SPs) was offered for free. I was actually happier as it made my reinstalls so much easier 🙂 I'm more upset that they removed it from Origin. I know a lot of people who would love to try it but are wary of getting it second hand or a third party downloader. More players means more people to introduce to the community and will give the game greater longevity. Plus, more people to geek out over it with 😆😆😆

I remember buying TS4 for $60 the day it came out and being so pissed at how bare it was that I didn't play again for almost 2 years 😭

This would of been a good way to celebrate the Sims anniversary to be honest

I’m kinda intrigued but the thought still crosses my mind of, What about those of us that spent money on the base game? Surely it’s not fair that we just lose out- and yeah you could be like “oh but all the memories you’ve made with the sims 4 so far makes it worth it!” But I feel like with all the failures of the sims 4 and glitches going on now, maybe they should give us some constellation for not only putting up with endless lacklustre pack releases with not nearly enough content or way too many bugs or all the kit releases against the player base’s voice wanting more real packs with gameplay; I sort of feel like if they’re now going to legitimately make the base game free, those of us who paid for the base game kinda deserve some consolation, don’t think they’d be willing to give us a free expansion [even though at least in my country, the value would be equal to an expansion] but at least a game pack?
Respectfully, the sims 4 has screwed over so many players from broken games to incomplete packs and a total price of almost $1, 500 [in my country], I just think we need Something to ease such a sharp turn that continues to put the people who’ve spent money on the game for years on the back burner

It just seems to me that after 8 years and putting the base game on sale for $5 pretty much every couple months, it makes sense they'd finally say, "Our bread & butter come from the expansions, lets hook more new players in by giving away the base game." Essentially making the base game the "gateway drug" to hook more players into buying DLC. Frankly I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner. I think they've squeezed the base game dry at this point, so why the heck not? Little surprised that they tossed us the kit, but that makes sense too, given that it's the same price they've been charging for the base game, and I think they knew they'd BETTER toss us SOME kinda bone. Meh. Ok. I wasn't gonna buy the kit, but I will take it for free. I only wanted a couple items. Now I'll have them.
The only thing that bothers me is the "free to play" terminology, like... will they be forcing all of us into EA Play? Didn't they say that was coming over a year ago? And does that mean we won't actually OWN the game going forward if we want new content? Will it end up eventually becoming a subscription service, ala Adobe Creative Suite's monthly extortion instead of buying it outright? That'd be the end of The Sims for me, if that happened.

I bet Disney Dreamlight Valley spooked them.
That game is getting a lot of interest, even though the game is more animal crossings/Stardew Valley, more simmers will probably be playing it.

Ehhh. Base game is like 5 dollars when it's on sale, sometimes it's even less or free at one point. The based price is also lower comparing to the launch pirce at $60 that I've paid for, so I'm over that already. In the end of the days, the experience is everything. I've not played sims 4 the way I used to since June because I rage quitted seeing those features I loved broken by patches. Seeing bugs piling up while patches fixed just break even more. (And no I don't have mod and those bugs are reported. I even reported some). I'm pretty done with this game. I'm currently enjoying sims 3. it's not bug free, but it also won't get broken even more. I adored sims 4, the morden graphics, smooth gameplay and the chill vibes. I'm just sick of seeing features I was enjoying suddenly broken after the update and waiting them to get fixed for months or even more. In the end of the day, it's just an entertainment and I just have a better times with other sims game while I do not enjoy sims 4 in it currently states and I don't see it getting better anytime soon after having false hope for too many times.

Game Bolt has EA's FY23 game releases and the third quarter starts on 01 October to 31 December. Only Need for Speed and NHL are listed. However, the fourth (01 JAN to 31 MAR) quarter has "Major IP, "Parter Title", "Remake' and "Sports Title" listed. The point I am trying to get to is maybe Maxis is trying to push a third quarter release/refresh and offer free stuff to entice new simmers before Christmas.
Also, I love today's outro. 😄

They already had phases in which the base game was for free for a weekend or sth like that. That seems to have had a positive effect.

I don't think anything is really changing for people who already play Sims 4. The game is 8 years old and has been sold for $5 many times. They make their money from DLC, so this is smart of them. Overall I think this is a positive thing because it doesn't affect current players and it allows for more people to be able to play the game

Thanks for this update, Erin! I’m pretty neutral about this - definitely seems like it’s a way to boost DLC sales and I don’t have any issues with that or worries. Would be cool if it coincided with a game pack refresh but sounds like that might not be the case.

I think it will be good for sales ….they will then get people buying more expansion packs
