Kimberly Williams-Paisley opens up about her “terrifying” and life-changing medical ordeal that left her barely able to speak for two years. The actress reveals how she inexplicably lost her voice, setting off a desperate search for answers and countless doctor visits. “So much of our personalities are expressed in our voice. My career—I'm an actor, a public speaker,” Kimberly shares. “When that’s gone, who am I?”

After a long and uncertain journey, vocal cord surgery (performed while the actress was awake) finally provided a glimmer of hope. Throughout it all, Kimberly’s husband, country music star Brad Paisley, stood by her side, offering unwavering support as she navigated the emotional and physical toll of her condition. In this candid interview, Kimberly shares the intimate details of her struggle, the impact it had on her life, and how she found the strength to heal.

I was especially touched by the comment that Kimberly admires people who can talk about the hard things WHEN they are going through them. That statement gives me courage.

1 18:08 Kimberly, I am so sorry this happened to you. Thank you for talking about and bringing awareness to it. 25 years ago I was diagnosed with Spasmodic dysphonia. After many different doctor appointments with no cure, no resolution, I found a wonderful doctor above the Opera House in Chicago, who listen to me and diagnosed me within a minute. I ended up with braces on my vocal cords. This really brought me back to 90%. I considered that a big win.

Thank you again for using your popularity to talk about it and bring it to the attention of anyone searching for answers. ❤

I related so much to this. I lost my voice for a couple years too. It was down to a whisper. It was so frustrating talking to people. Went to a bunch of doctors. But no diagnosis was ever made. Then one day my voice just came back. It was a miracle.

I've been struggling with my voice for about 18 months now. I worked in 911 for 28 years and relied on my voice to always be the calm in an otherwise awful situation for people. I noticed my voice changing just before I retired, I chalked it up to a stressful career choice, however I've noticed that there are days I can't talk, or if I do it's in a high pitched weak tone. I now wonder if there is more to the voice change. Like is this really a thing?

So wonderful to see you. I am so glad you have your voice back. You’re an amazing actress. I love watching you on film. Thank you for sharing the story. I’m sure it will help many others. I’ve always thought of you as such a kind soul. I’m glad you’re meditating. That has help me probably more than anything in life.
