Moore - The Tornado Capital Of The World

If I asked you to name a town or city that you knew of that had gotten hit by a tornado, I'd be willing to bet that the answer would be familiar. Moore, Oklahoma is synonymous with getting hit by tornadoes and many of you are probably familiar with the 1999 F5 and the 2013 EF5. Although these two examples are well known, what isn't as well know is the rest of Moore's crazy history with tornadoes. Since it's inception in the early 1890's Moore has been hit by upwards of 20 tornadoes with numerous strong tornadoes occurring as well. In this video we discuss all of Moore's tornado encounters and the possible explanation as to why Moore is such a tornado magnet.

Fun fact, moore is only place where an f5(bridge creek-moore 1999) and an ef5 (moore 2013) have crossed paths

One issue with the map. The Moore city boundaries shown are the _current_ ones. When a lot of these tornadoes hit, particularly the ones before 1960, what is now miles of suburban development was likely back then mostly farmland and not in the Moore city limits at the time.

Between the 1960 and 1980 censuses Moore expanded to _28 times_ it's 1960 population, and since 1980 has grown another 75%. It's obviously a much bigger target now.

An interesting fact about the November 19, 1973 tornado, there's footage of the TV coverage, and you've likely seen a snippet of it. It's shown on the family television as occurring in "June 1969" in the opening scene of _Twister_ . The meteorologist that night? None other than the legendary Gary England who would cover the more infamous Moore tornadoes decades later.

And yes, there's video of that coverage uploaded to YouTube.

Moore may of not got hit this year, but man, Oklahoma woke from a slumber with really strong tornadoes all over the entire state and way more tornadoes than on average, especially may.

Two F5/EF5 tornadoes in 14 years with 2 F4/EF4s in between. Not to mention, the May 3rd and 2013 F5/EF5s are also amongst the most violent tornadoes ever recorded. We know how powerful May 3rd was, but the 2013 EF5 was nothing to sneeze at. It tore up and shredded plumbing and electrical routing out of foundations. That's Jarrell/Smithville levels of violence.

Well, I would've named Elkhorn, but Moore is probably a _more_ likely answer from people due to it being infamous for the F5 and EF5.

I'm from Moore, OK, I currently live in Polk County, Oregon now safe from tornadoes for the most part. My family still lives in Moore and every Spring/Fall I stress for their safety.

Gainesville, GA is a bit of a tornado magnet as well. Quite a few have hit there including two of the deadliest in US history, both F4s.

That's crazy, even though that area of the USA has tornados, 1 town being hit that many times is insane, I'd build a house of reinforced steel, with a storm shelter.

My goal when I retire is to live in a travel trailer in Moore with no basement
