The dissipation of the 7805 regulator ic is (input voltage- output voltage)*current. In this circuit, 45% of the power is going to turn into heat, therefore only 55% of the energy is going to charge the phone. The capacity of normal 9V battery is 5-600mAh. If your phone's battery capacity is 2000mAh, you need 2000/600/0, 45~8 9V battery to charge your phone. If you use a DC-DC converter you need only 3, 3~4 battery. It is also a good idea to use a solar panel instead of batteries.
