The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas represents a new shock for international geopolitical relations, coming less than two years after the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. Hamas’s attacks and Israel’s response have generated various reactions from governments around the world. Global geopolitical divisions could widen and accelerate further as a consequence of this conflict.

In this webinar moderated by Lawrence Freedman, Japan’s former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Hitoshi Tanaka discussed Japan’s perspective on and response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. He analysed the potential impact on the international order and Japan’s position in it. Additionally, he shared his opinions about Japan’s role as this year’s G7 host and innovative diplomatic approaches that could be taken towards recent global conflicts.

Sadly blinkered short term self interest shown by both gentlemen . Disappointing

So what he says is that Japan just does what the US tells them to do.

What I got is that Japan gladly follows the USA straight to the abyss

I'm an American that's ashamed of our foreign policy since Eisenhower left especially. I think the whole world would be better off if we focus on our domestic problems and stop trying to control the world. I welcome multipolarity, it's a good thing and whoever takes over cannot do a worse more destructive job than the US has done since the end of WW2. Let China, Russia, Iran or whoever step into the breach. We have our own problems let's fix them instead of creating more problems throughout the rest of the world.

From what I understand, the violations of human rights by Japan in the second world war was brought to an end by the reaction on them of the USA.

In my view, Japan is The Peacemaker Of The World, and I love Japan because they actually learn from the past.

Did he say the aggressive entry of Israel into Gaza? Did he mean to say the aggressive entry of Hamas into Israel? I'm so confused.

Thank you for speaking up when something is so terribly wrong. If you are very dependent on oil you need to think about your relationship with the Arab nations, and so do Americans. I am American and have been around for sometime. I am against all these wars we have been involved in with civilian casualties, and we need the money domestically to solve many problems we have. And it is immoral and against our democratic values, and many times International Law.

I am from Malaysia, and I was about 5 years old when Japanese army inavaded all countries in South-East Asia during World War 2 .

It is sad to say the Japanese Army inflicted massive and untold cruelties on people in South-East Asian countries during Japanese Occupation.

Japan was trying to conquer all the countries in South-East Asia to establish GREATER JAPANESE EMPIRE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA .

FORTUNATELY IT FAILED .❤❤❤

The Japanese "expert" lives in La-La Land when stating that Israel did too much. The truth is that the more Israel does to erase Hamas the less likely a much larger conflagration later. Many assess that a larger war with Iran is inevitable. This should be the almost the only relevant strategic consideration for "experts".

Japan was nuclear bombed by America during the Second World War. Since then, it has been an obedient and subservient colony of America. It cannot act independent of US foreign policy. It such a pathetic situation that we understand the waffling of the Japanese speaker in this discussion.

I was thinking that Japan will surprise me with some special approach to this matter 😊, but I understand from this discussion that even if he said that Japans hands are not dirty in the Middle East, Japan has the same statements as other countries do, nothing creative or non ordinary

Sadly when you are ignorant of the facts, it is better to be quiet! That is being wise!

Israel is such a tiny strip of land compared to the enormous surrounding Islamic countries ! Why can’t they establish a Palestinian city for the Palestines and leave Israel alone! God gave the land of Israel to the Jewish people!!

Should tte humanitarian situation be stopped before the SOURCE of the problem be removed - thus ensuring it will recur as promised by Hamas ?

So this guy doesn’t really reflect the views of japan as the byline suggests. This is his personal assessment which he admits is uneducated.

I am no political analyst but even I can see that the Japanese representative has a greater grasp of the reality of the trajectory of America's decline in power. The other gentleman is operating on a position of colonial arrogance.

An insightful expression of the very logical and, morally comprehensible, stance Japan is taking on the current state of things.
