Q1. According to the book of Luke in the KJV Bible, which of these people was the first to be visited by an angel? | Bible Trivia #121
- Mary
- Joseph
- The shepherds
- Zacharias
In Luke chapter 1:11-23 Zacharias (or Zechariah) went to the temple to present an offering to the LORD. While he was there an angel came to him and told him he was going to have a son. He didn't believe the angel so he was made mute until his son was born. The angel told him to name his son John. When the child was born, he was therefore named John and his father's speech was restored. The next angel manifestation is in Luke Chapter 1:26 when Gabriel visited Mary. Then it was the turn of the shepherds, mentioned in Luke chapter 2. The visit of the angel to Joseph is mentioned in the gospel of Matthew.
#Answer: Zacharias

Q2. The Angel Gabriel visited both Zechariah and Mary with joyful news of a child's birth. What was the basic contrast or similarity in their reaction to Gabriel's message?
Mary had a believing attitude even though she did ask Gabriel how it will be possible that she conceive and give birth to Jesus, as she was a virgin. Mary then accepted the words (Luke Chapter 1:38) - '"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.' Zechariah, on the other hand, was disbelieving from the very start and needed to be sure or needed further proof as he and his wife were elderly. Ironically Mary was rewarded for her faith as she exulted (rejoiced) in her spirit in God and glorified God with her soul (with her words) when she visited her cousin Elizabeth, while Zechariah was unable to speak as per Gabriel's words till the birth of his son John. After John the Baptist was born, his father's tongue was loosened and he gave praise to God.
#Answer: Mary had a more believing attitude rather than disbelieving.

Q3. What evidence do we find in the Gospel of Luke to show that Mary the mother of Jesus was an affectionate and family-minded lady even before marriage
Angel Gabriel arrives and appears to Mary with his famous 'Hail highly favoured' greeting and message and informs her that she will give birth to the holy Son of God Jesus via the power of Almighty God's loving and holy Spirit. He then goes on to say that her elderly, formerly barren, cousin Elizabeth is already sixth months pregnant.
(Luke 1:38-40,56) '"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. ... Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months(approximately till she gave birth) and then returned home.'
#Answer: Mary hurried to be with and help her pregnant cousin Elizabeth

Q4. John the Baptist is often referred to as Jesus' cousin. Which of them was the older one, according to Luke?
The angel Gabriel, who informed Zacharias that Elisabeth would bear a son to be named John and subsequently announced to Mary her forthcoming impregnation by The Holy Ghost, is one of the only two angels for whom the Bible gives a specific name.
According to Luke (1:36), Elisabeth had been unexpectedly (because of her advanced age and previous barrenness) pregnant for about six months when her much-younger cousin Mary arrived to visit and share their news.
#Answer: John the Baptist, by about six months

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
Luke 1:5-25
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.
14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
