Thanks HR for a great video. You provide an excellent public service to all of us. I will pass on this one. All the best!

The biggest travesty is coming with only one magazine. Should include at least one 20 rounder and two 30 or 40 round mags.

Interesting results. I like how this carbine is set up, but I never warmed up to the notion of 5.7 vs other options. 👍👍

Interesting video HR. Bizarre that first round jam issue. I don't see any need for 5.7 as a caliber though. At least they did you the favor of naming the cartridge after how many dollars you're shelling out for a box of ammo.

I offer this comment after watching the review and thinking about the first shoot magazine problems.

Lots of fine quality PCC manufacturers (S&W, Ruger, Beretta, etc.) have understandably opted to use identical mags in their carbines and autoloaders. Obviously, this makes sense and is a clear marketing and manufacturing cost advantage. However, the required tolerances may be more difficult to attain in a follow-on carbine, than in the original semiautomatic. Magazines (imho) are the #1 cause of autoloader malfunctions . . . and I suspect many of us have resorted to not loading the last round (or even two rounds) or to keeping a magazine fully loaded for months, with the hope of “working around” what actually is a factual design flaw. And, as you certainly indicted, HR, when the consumer pays approximately $1000 for a firearm, that plainly is unsatisfactory. I’m a long-term advocate of Ruger revolvers, shotguns and rifles, but my confidence in the brand is undermined by this 5.7x28 carbine . . . and the fact that essentially similar problems occurred repeatedly, with two high-quality factory ammunitions, seems quite nioteworthy.

Thank you for reinforcing my disdain for the 5.7 especially in this firearm. Keep up the great work.

Cool! HR has a Ruger 57. Can't wait to see the vid and review!

I had an ec9s with a similar issue, except if you fully loaded the magazine and inserted it with the slide forward it would drag so bad it made cycling the slide near impossible because of the slide dragging against the cartridge
For that firearm I had to use a very specific angle when inserting a full magazine if I wanted a gun to run

Regarding function, we learned long ago that with 20+ round mags, you download by about 10%. 20 round mags get 18, 30 round mags get 27, etc. The extra rounds aren't worth the loss of reliability and difficulty seating the mag under a closed bolt. Would be curious to see your results if you tested the gun again with the mags so down-loaded.

The 5.7 cartridge was designed to penetrate body armor in a PDW for certain military applications (soldiers who needed a very compact weapon, like pilots, tank crews, and truck drivers). Ever since, manufacturers have tried to foist that cartridge onto the general public. I personally have no use for it, but choices are nice to have.

I have a Ruger 57 handgun and also a Savage 17 WSM. Both guns fail to extract American Eagle ammo. I was told it has a protection layer of some kind on it. Soooo, I took some gun scrubber on a rag and cleaned a few. No more issues with fail to extract. The FN ammo never had an issue.
Also with any and every mag of any kind I use. I take apart and clean the molding edges or grooves from them.

I awake to get a notification that HR dropped a video about 5.7, what a great way to start the day

I objected, she fought back and she was fierce, I folded and agreed to watch the video later She is a keeper but she just doesn't realize the importance of watching the premiere. I am just glad I won't have to try to justify $1k for a new rifle I will save that battle for something else . Thanks HR for another well done review

The more of these plastic chunks I see, the more I think a scout rifle or lever gun is for me.

FN marketeers hyped the cartridge when it came out but the military and law enforcement evaluations found it not to be a replacement for the 9mm. I look at the 5.7 x 28 as just the equivalent of a .22WMR +p round. It is slightly more effective than .22WMR but "not enough difference to make a difference." The only advantage 5.7 has is centerfire reliabilty. The round has caught on because of Call of Duty. I will leave SG1 to use 5.7 x 28 from their P90s

The consensus seems to be negative on this one. I thought about that cartridge quite a bit and could not see a need for it. Maybe for a subgun, but I'll never know.

I gave this video a thumbs up but I want to say a few things about the Ruger and 5.7.
The proper ammo is a game changer for this and the P90.
FN originally designed this with a 40, 000-48, 000 steel core bullet.
Most of the consumer ammo is loaded 35, 000-40, 000 psi.
This is weak target ammo.
It will not cycle the gun properly.
This also is supposed to have a lacquer coating on it which helps extraction and ejection. Sometimes the coating is done wrong and it causes issues (from all the man not fn)
Elite ammunition, Vanguard black fang and fn ss190 are what this gun is made to use. A 9mm has more energy at the muzzle than a 5.7 but the ss190 can penetrate a kevlar helmet at 200 meters and has more energy than 9mm at that distance due to drag coefficient..
The 5.7 is a brutal round but THE BULLET AND LOAD are what determines this not the gun necessarily. The reason the FN bullets (blue and red) box are so expensive is that they are aluminum with copper jacket. The ss190 are steel cored and are armor penetrating rounds.
I am not an expert and do not claim to be but this is what I have learned through my research and owning something chambered in 5.7...
Jay from Elite ammunition has a great rumble and youtube channel and he is the expert on all things 5.7 if you are interested.

Thanks as usual for the honest, unbiased review. I don't have any real interest in a 5.7 but that would have been my choice if I decided on one. It probably would be more reliable if you downloaded the mags by a couple of rounds like many(me included) do AR15's. But Ruger already makes good PCC's in 9mm that don't have problems & 9mm's far cheaper to practice with.

When Ruger came out the 5.7 pistol I was hoping they would make a rifle. Now I feel like I got stood up on a big date with the hot chick.
