I bought a fake Pokémon game, also known as a reproduction or repro game. Here's what happened when I played it!

The reason it made that sound is most likely because it has less SRAM than an authentic cart, so it pauses all function during a save. That’s my theory at least.

Those games uses a internal battery to keep your save file. If the battery dies, you'll lose your then you can just replace the battery to be able to save again but the other file is gone for good.

It’s not changing the resolution, just the aspect ratio. It’s that crisp stretch 👃🏻

I mean, if the battery inside an authenticate cart dies, the save it gone anyways, that is an issue with real copies too

These newer bootlegs injects the save file inside the ROM. That weird sound is the 'pause' during that injection. The board actually has SRAM, but no battery. The way it works when you save is that it saves first in the SRAM then it inject that saves in the ROM.

The only issue is the battery. Sometimes they are very cheap, and won't last 6 months. you can just play through the game and be done. Probably take you 8 hrs, and 16 to finish the dex. Then honestly no reason to play on a Gameboy, emulation gives access to save states and speed up.

Cheap carts have one major problem, they mostly don't work with Transfer Pak and N64

Growing up in Brazil in the late 90’s with a gameboy I’ve never played a non-fake cartridge lol

most of the original game bootlegs (red, blue, yellow, gold, silver, crystal) only have one issue that i noticed from past experience and that would be that you cant trade

I noticed I had a fake fire red saves took awhile but kept the file. But soon as I progressed on the game after 4 gym leaders it would disappear

The game freezes when you try to save it. Also, saving while changing the pc boxes doesn’t actually save your game on the fake games, you ALWAYS have to save from the menu. That includes beating the champion and watching the credits and saving after. Trading with other people also doesn’t save the game either for whatever reason.

every single copy of Pokemon on the Gameboy when you put it in a Gameboy advance or game boy advance SP you can change the resolution I know because I have a perfectly fine copy of Pokemon yellow

I bought my brother a fake copy once. The battery didn't last long, indeed causing him to lose his save file, but you can quite easily and cheaply buy a battery and replace it. I'd be annoyed, but he wasn't bothered.

You really thought they couldn't replicate a simple GB cartridge? :P

Also GameSharks don’t work on bootlegs

This may just be me being young and not growing up with this type of technology but why do people care about having the real deal when a fake one that does the same job as the other one but just a bit worse also gets the job done I just don't get it?

The official Gold and Silver save files disappeared after about 12 years thanks to the internal clock battery in the cartridge running out. I will never see my lv99 Typhlosion named Mickey ever again!

I'm pretty sure it is a reproduction cartridge, those usually have an improved saving feature so that the battery won't die, and you won't lose your save file. Thats why it froze for a bit when you were saving.

Im pretty sure the first time you save an Old pokemon game, it always takes a bit longer because it needs to create the save file first.
