Thinking about diving into The First Law Trilogy? Before you do, let me give you a heads-up on what to expect. This video explores the key themes, characters, and the unconventional plot structure of Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law series. We’ll discuss why the story’s dark, gritty world and morally complex characters have captivated so many readers. I’ll also touch on some reasons why this trilogy might not be for everyone, including its grim tone and the way it flips traditional fantasy tropes on their head. Whether you’re new to grimdark fantasy or just curious about Abercrombie’s work, this video will give you a good sense of what lies ahead in The First Law.

As a disabled man I can actually relate quite a bit to Glokta. To be clear, not the inquisitor part.

Also, The original trilogy was so good I didn't think it could possibly get any better. Joe did the impossible and came out with the Age of Madness trilogy exceeding anything he's ever written. Incredible.

God I love these books and these characters. I cackled when you described what makes Glokta so damn amusing. What a character!

Recently discovered your channel and already a big fan. Thanks for the great videos. Read the first law trilogy this year for the first time. Loved it. Each book is better than the last in my opinion. The Last Argument of Kings is now firmly one of the best books i've ever read. Looking forward to discovering the stand alones and Age of Madness trilogy.

Currently figuring out which kidney I should sell for an advanced reader copy of The Devils :)

Say one thing about Paperback Journeys, say he has good reviews.

Thank you for explaining it all in detail. Oh boy, I'm not sure this will be for me, but I've got it on hold at the library and I'm excited to read it.

I'm really a science fiction fan, and haven't considered reading any fantasy. I have read the first book of The Dresden Files and liked that. I'll likely give the First Law Trilogy a go on audiobook. I need to continue the Dresden Files as well - I believe it gets better around book 4 (?), but I'd like to read them all.

First book has been on my kindle for a long time. Maybe after I read this Non fiction book about these nice twins who love to help people. They are called The Krays.

Glad to hear the series starts to pick up after the first book. I read The Blade Itself and did enjoy it, but from all the high praise I had heard, I was a little disappointed. The book was good, don't get me wrong, but I did find it a little tedious in some parts and the build up didn't really land that big payoff punch I was hoping for. There were some great parts for sure, and I am interested in the characters and the world, so I will be happy to jump into Before They are Hanged and see where it goes from there.

This trilogy has been sitting on my TBR list for quite some time now, but I'm a bit hesitant to commit to it. My first taste of grimdark fantasy was The Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence, and honestly, I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. For those who have read both trilogies, how does this compare to The Broken Empire? I'd really like to give this genre another shot.

You have to be realistic.

Better to do a thing than live in the fear of it.

Still alive. Still alive.

I think you have to like the humor to like this series. I personally felt like it was mostly just a case of "same joke" a bit too much. So ehh. A buch of characters making choices that don't matter with the same joke on repeat. The first book was inoffensive, but I'm not finishing the series.
