How Ritonavir acts as booster drug

Ritonavir is used as both antiretroviral agent as well as booster drug along with other protease inhibitors in the treatment of HIV. It inhibits the CYP3A4 enzyme at the intestine and at liver thereby inhibits the metabolism of other Protease inhibitors. It also inhibits p-glycoprotein pump thereby inhibits efflux of protease inhibitors from the blood into intestine.
