The Actualising Tendency is a theory from Carl Rogers that is central to the person-centred approach to Counselling. In this video, I break down what it really means, with clear explanations and examples (of course, the potato has to feature at some point...)

I will also outline some common misconceptions around the Actualising Tendency related to Self-Concept and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

In the video, I also mentioned there being some further writings on the Actualiisng Tendency. Here are a few of the best available online:

I personally often find Rogers texts to be quite hard to digest. This is really helpful and makes me grasp a better understanding.

Wow! I'm writing an assignment and was getting a bit bogged down in thinking about my own self-concept and how it relates to my actualising tendency. I'm so grateful that towards the end of this video you unpack that relationship so clearly and carefully. Thank you!

Thank you Chris for taking the time to highlight, break down and explain extremely clearly, the areas of counselling. I want to thank you for all the videos that you have done and posted. I am a student doing a level 4 diploma. There is quite a lot of context and information about person centred counselling and it has areas which take time to fully comprehend and achieve confidence in. I have saved your videos for future reference.
More experienced counsellors could offer so much to future generations. You are a credit. Thank you 😊

You explained this concept very well and though you say it is hard, I understood it very well. You made me enjoy Carl Roger's concept of person centered approach. The fact that he considered all life forms as having a desire to be better and always pursuing self actualisation is such a wonderful concept. It seems to me that he was a very understanding and caring man at heart. I must say that his clients must have been blessed to have him as a therapist. I would love to get a hold of his book, "A Way of Being" to read more and understand what he was all about and hopefully better understand how he conducted his therapy sessions! Thanks! :)

Thank you for a simple and good explanation of the actualising tendency. It helps me a lot in my studies here in sweden. It's not always easy to understand all the psychological terms and explanations.

I really appreciate this video, as someone who has just started a person-centred specific counselling course I can find Carl's original works quite difficult to follow and piece together sometimes. Please could you maybe outline how the actualising tendency is different to 'self actualization' or the 'tendency towards self-actualisation'? Carl refers to it in 'A Theory of Therapy, Personality, and Interpersonal Relationships as Developed in the client-centred framework' chapter on pages 196-197 after writing about the actualizing tendancy. Maybe it will become clearer to me the more I read and learn. Your videos are amazing, thank you!!
