East Point woman killed by a man she was trying to help, family says

21-year-old Dennishia Smith was shot and killed by a man her family says she was trying to help. Authorities say they arrested and charged Shelton Handspike with one count of murder.

My heart breaks for Dennishia. I was in a similar situation a few years ago, allowing someone I considered a friend to stay with me while she got back on her feet financially. After she "moved in, " it became clear she had no intention of leaving. Eventually, I convinced her to leave, but she blamed her whole situation on me and made demands of me. I was scared because I remembered a couple of comments she had made in the past about guns, and I didn't know if she had one with her. I had my locks changed right away, but there was evidence that she had returned a couple of times and tried to get in. It's sad that the world is in such a state that we cannot trust people, even people we think we know. Dennishia was a kind and compassionate soul, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for wanting to help someone in need. My condolences to Dennishia's loved ones. 💔

My husbands’ cousin was also killed by a homeless man he was trying to help. You never know what kind of people you are dealing with.

Too many people have been killed or a family member killed by someone they were trying to help. Do not let homeless people move in with you! Find other ways to help them because you don't know their history or what they are capable of. This is just heartbreaking...beautiful, sweet, young girl just trying to be compassionate. If a man has nothing, and has nowhere else to go, the last thing he’ll let you do is to kick him out. He’s the last person you should invite to stay in your home. He has nothing to lose. You can’t (or shouldn’t) help everyone. God, please give strength to this mother.

When I was much younger and got my first apartment - I was VERY cautious about my space ! Nobody sleeping on the couch that needs a place to stay, no hanging out for hours, if I dont know you like that and you aint paying bills -go on about your business . It doesnt matter if people think youre mean or stuck up . Protecting your space is vital ! Im so sorry this happened .

I regretted inviting a young, homeless man into my home. No romantic interest either. He became dirty, disrespectful, rude and threatening FAST. He stole from me, harassed my neighbors & smoked crack in apt building basement. After finally getting him out, he broke in while I was asleep. Almost lost my home. Feel blessed to be alive. NEVER allow anyone inside of your home. God bless her sweet, innocent, good heart. Condolences to mom & family. Heart wrenching.

He looks crazy. You can't help a lot of people in this time. You have to be very cautious. It's easy for somebody to move in, but getting them out is a whole different ball game. I'm so sorry to hear this. She was so young and she was trying to be independent by having her own place. It's hard out here. Sometimes having 1job isn't enough. Rent going up and the gas. You can't trust a lot of people even some of your family members.
