Really good, practical video for those of us with an older car who don't want to spend a ton of money to fix a relatively small issue. I have two spots that are about the size of a half dollar and a nickel, going to try this trick on both. Even if it doesn't turn out perfect at least I won't have to worry about the spots getting bigger and eventually ruining the finish.

I strongly recommend the spraymax 2k clear coat, and using spraymax blender to soften the original clear coat in order to fuse the old and new clear coat together. This has worked for me every time and is impossible to see the blend. This is still a great & simple video with lots of of information, my comment is for the next level of finish/quality, its also gonna add $40-60

I used a house grade power washer that really helped remove the flakes I just don't understand how the before sanding works without getting into your base coat. On my car the previous owner buffer burned the clear coat great video 👍

I like the fact that you showed us we don't have to go down to bare metal but, let's imagine it was a rust damage, how would you have done it, step by step from start to finish? material application-wise.

I was trying this and followed your method for sanding best as possible but I got to the paint very quickly. In some spots I no longer can see the metallic flake of the paint and it’s slightly darker, is this the primer?
At this point do you think I should just buy a spray kit with primer and paint, they’re not bad like $80. I’d appreciate any thoughts

Is there any reason I shouldn’t try this before getting an entire repaint? I have a spot about 1x2 inches on my driver door that has chipped away, the paint underneath looks perfectly fine (it’s a red vw Golf R)

Unfortunately the breakdown is not something that "spreads" from an initial spot. It is a condition of the clear coat that affects all areas and is most advanced in zones that get the highest sun exposure. So that little spot is just a harbinger of things to come. Soon large swaths will begin to break down and there is not much you can do about it.

You should always use a sanding block not just your fingers to get more even sanding marks

I tried... As soon as I used the 400 grit sand paper, the paint started to come off. Body shop is awaiting for me :(

I would rather not have the clear coat at all, it's a pain in the ass, the old non metallic car paint was the best, easy to rub down and feather the touch up paint after, never failed. After that just use turtle wax.
