Thank you for posting this video! I own a white 1988 750iL!

Regarding the alternator, it's not always the alternator. There is an engine electrical system responsible for connecting the battery to the alternator. It's mainly a thick electrical cable that goes bad. BMW wants $800 to replace that main cable (engine heat damages the copper inside it, thus the weak charging performance), but you can replace it with similar thickness welding cable for a lot less. An E32 expert named Shogun on Bimmerboard.com E32 board has a how to for building an new engine electrical cable.

The alternator can be tested at Autozone once you pull it from the car. Sometimes replacing the regulator on the alternator restores the alternator, or sometimes the alternator needs to be rebuilt.

The master cylinder has likely failed on the car. You can buy rebuilt ones for under $100. New ones are over $300 from BMW.

Another known failure point on this car is that the power steering pump is a dual vane power steering pump. One internal pump mechanism is for your power steering, the other controls a hydraulic leveling system known as SLS or LAD. This is a very expensive and leak prone system to maintain. Signs of failure include a sagging rear end and leaks under the rear side of the car. The control diaphragm that controls this system is no longer made or produced by BMW. The company that made these was bought out by another company a few years ago and that parent company discontinued production of the diaphragm. Some have had success modifying a control diaphragm from an E38 (third generation 7 series) which used an air powered system. Most people just convert the system to a conventional sport suspension system in the rear and either run the lines in a continuous loop, OR they disable the system entirely by bolting M10 bolts on the SLS ports on the power steering system. Also, be sure to use Pentosin in the power steering system. Some have replaced this very expensive fluid ($20 a bottle, and the system requires several bottles) with ATF fluid, but ATF attacks the seals inside the pump, requiring a rebuild or replacement of the power steering pump. This pump is nearly $1, 000 new from BMW, but can be rebuilt with new seals for $100 to $200.

A Youtuber named M539 Restorations is rebuilding a car very similar to this. You might want to check out his channel.

Numerous parts on this car are NLA (No Longer Available) from BMW. If you're relatively savvy at rebuilding or replacing worn parts, or just very creative at engineering new replacements from scratch, this won't be an obstacle. ECS Tuning and Pelican Parts are two well known and respected replacement parts sources. You can get parts numbers and dealership parts prices from realoem.com. You will have to select the "Classic" catalog to find the car listed. Another source for replacement parts (very expensive though) is Maximillian Importing. This is actually a business arm of BMW Classic (yes THAT BMW, one and the same). They can provide a lot of these NLA parts, but the prices are likely to be prohibitively expensive. Best to source local experts who can rebuild worn parts.

For wheels, wheelcollision.com has a great online catalog for wheels at affordable prices. They also buy, sell, trade, and refurbish wheels.

E38.org has a whole catalog dedicated to how-to's for this car, which is known as an E32, internal BMW code for a second generation 7-series (1988 to 1994).

Another source of E32 fixes and upgrades is located at bmwe32.masscom.net

Your car is a 1992, one of the last of the early model E32's. Yours has the "facelift" front bumper, the first year for that. Starting with the 1993 and 1994 cars, BMW made a whole slew of changes to these cars including a modified dashboard that incorporates dual airbags. BMW changed the steering wheel in 7/90, which means that steering wheels from cars built prior to that date will not fit this car.

The car's expensive maintenance requirements are a big reason these cars are so difficult to find. Money is not necessarily an obstacle if you're creative with fixes for this car. When I bought mine, the instrument cluster took several minutes to power on, and it kept resetting the trip odometer to zero every time I turned the car off. The dealer wanted $700 for a new cluster back in 2005, but I discovered that the fix was replacing five faulty capacitors on the electronic board for the cluster for thirty cents each. For a grand total of $13, I repaired my instrument cluster on my car. These cars require creative and hands-on owners, not necessarily wealthy ones.

I have had mine since December 2005. I look forward to seeing this rebuild.

I would have drained the fuel out and put fresh gas in it before driving it.
I drove my car for a month without an alternator. Just kept charging the battery up and only drove when I absolutely had to.
I wonder if you throttle is sticking since you can't get the engine to rev up.
It does look like a descent car despite being up there in that wet climate.

The only thing more annoying is that that phone is probably outdated, with today*s technology, I don*t know if it is compatible, it would be nice if it is compatible with today*s technology like the 4 or 5 Gs.
