Its your memories, hopes, and feelings at stake, and no one else's. Its convenient for people to say dying is just a part of life, when they have decades left to see what the future holds, while you miss out.

You alone have to deal with your mortality and the pain and consequences that come with it; no one else does

The whole concept of Valentine's Day is pretty stupid, in my opinion. Reminding your SO that you love him or her by buying material items seems pretty superficial and deceiving (as this brilliant video implies). Of course spending time with your loved one is meaningful, but the holiday's emphasis on public flaunting of love just feels like a big slap in the face to those without someone to celebrate it with. Maybe I'm being a bit of a dick, but I personally feel that love shouldn't rubbed in other's faces, and instead be celebrated in private where couples can appreciate their relationship on a more intimate and personal level. But whatever you do is fine with me. I'm just gonna spend Valentine's Day shooting and driving over people in GTA, as I do every year.

the trick is to let a relationship be an addition to your life, not the foundation.

the deep fears and mistakes of the video are based on the premise that our culture sees a happy relationship as the be all end all of a life. Still it is very hard to practice this and never let these kinds of thoughts slip into your mind.

That's simply not true! Not all the relationships are bad and not all relationships are based on the principles of romanticism.

"I love you" is not a promise or an expectation. It is nothing more than a fact that should be communicated time to time to your partner; a true compliment that will make the other one to know/understand your feelings. "I love you" means I chose you to be my partner, I like you, I enjoy being with you, I appreciate you. NOW. Or for a while, as long we enjoy each other company.

And you don't need a "special day" to do so.

In Finland we call the day "Friend's day". :) So there is no need to cry if you don't have a partner. We used to make these heart cards at school and asked our classmates, teachers and family to sign their name to it. It was so much better way than celebrating love like this. Love should be about sharing.
