MOOCs: Charles Severance at TEDxKalamazoo

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Dr. Chuck's History of the Internet was my first MOOC. Now I work at a university that produces its own MOOCs. I teach the teachers :)

Dr. Chuck's class is so well presented, anyone can follow it and learn so much about the history and current security of the internet.  I'ts amazing.  Dr. Chuck is the best instructor I've had on coursera.  I've taken several classes in several catagories.  I love them all but Dr. Chucks's is still my favorite.

Thanks so much Dr.Chuck.  Eighteen months have flown by!  Your first class was one of the first Coursera classes I took.  I now have thirteen certificates from other Coursera classes I have taken in those intervening eighteen months. (There are others that I audited or took until I was in too far in over my head.)

I am 73 and one of the "old dogs" learning new tricks about new technology (as in your class) and learning to use new technology to take and participate in the other non-technical classes.

This has been a wonderful adventure and, while I can't go out and teach, I have been urging younger people I know to sign up for classes and explore what's available of interest and use to them.

I'm looking forward to taking your new programming course and seeing if this "old dog" can earn that new trick.  Thanks for all you are doing.

I liked his last comments about MOOCs showing how good a particular college might be at teaching an individual student.  I've taken several courses on Cousera including Dr. Chuck's IHTS.  I've taken some courses from Stanford and I have to say his point about helping people choose which institution to go to is really key.  I personally could not stand the teaching style of the Stanford MOOCs.  That's not to say the teachers there are not good, but rather they are not right for me.  After taking a Stanford MOOC course, I told myself I would never actually go to Stanford...  And conversely, after taking Dr. Chuck's course, I thought to myself  "I wonder if all of the teachers at University of Michigan are as good as Dr. Chuck."

Am MOOCs enthusiast, thanks to MOOCs providers such as coursera and others I have taken several courses from the world finest universities through MOOCs and gained great deal of knowledge thumbs down for MOOCs biases..

Great talk!  My Coursera class with Dr. Chuck starts soon and I got an email about office hours in DC in a Starbucks in Chinatown.  I was close to there but didn't know if it was a mistake because the class hadn't started and I didn't know why there would be office hours before the class.  Wish I had seen this before the email!  Missed my opportunity and it would have been great to meet you.  Looking forward to the class and maybe you'll find yourself in DC again sometime and I will have another opportunity.
