Hintertux — Skiing the Only Resort in the World Opened 365 Days a Year!

Yeah, I know.... Some may say, "What about Zermatt?!". Zermatt is great. And also is running 365 days a year. But those who have been up there in summer know we can hardly call it a resort during those months. Hintertux has mutliple "schleppers", chairs, gondolas that take you to over dozens of kilometers of skiable trails, fully functioning rental and restaurant that serves cappuccino in ceramic cups at 10,000ft high. Wink-wink ‘merica.

For summer skiing, the resorts sits on a glacier that is at its max depth 120m (390ft) thick, and over 4km (2.5miles) long. To get up there you need to take 3 gondolas, which, in just a few minutes, will bring you 1500m (4500ft) higher.

We started the day by waking up on one of the rest-stops in Austria, near Innsbruck, only about 40 minutes away from the resort. First you have to climb through the beautiful Zillertal valley, towns like Mayerhoffen and towards all the "something-Tux" villages, until you reach Hintertux village, at 1500m elevation.

We started with a beautiful bluebird, but had to keep an eye on reported thunderstorms heading our way. The elevation was felt in early fatigue but the day was a blast, even though the “warmth" is slowly getting the best of the high alpine ice and snow… as you see at the end of the video.

usually in Zermatt you have way more pistes open in summer, its also much higher, early in summer you can even go down to Trockner Steg. I've seen Hintertux in August being very sad, its like water skiing

i was in tux as well in july, same crowds in the morning and the pistes destroyed within a hour by all the ski teams, can not recommend going here as a recreational trip in the summer.

Hi Jan, i recognize your voice from generation snow! I am curious about visiting this summer, i am not familiar with the European trail classifications. Are the runs here considered intermediate or only expert runs?
