Seems like we have some things in common with Ancient Rome! Say hi to the ancient version of McDonalds 😂 Thermopolia were popular places to take ready-to-eat food, especially for people who didn't have kitchens at home.
They were often neighborhood stands that specialized in a few items, like wine, cheese, lentils, or meats. They even had an ancient version of hamburgers called isicia omentata.
They could also be more elegant settings with frescoed walls.
They were places to socialize, exchange news, and engage in conversation.

Pompeii is so well preserved that you can look down the crowded street of tourists and you would think you were in a normal town.

Fast food has been a thing as long as cities have been things.

Yes! This is still common in some countries. I was editing a novel for a client. The MC was thin on cash, and I questioned why she was often eating out still rather than eating at home. The author explained that where she grew up, the cost for electricity was high. A fridge was a luxury and most people ate "fast food" (rice and veggies. etc).

It would be great if they recreated an ancient Rome themed fast food restaurant just like it was in the past.
PS: Thermopolis looks a lot like those holes in the counter where they put the food in modern ice cream shops, especially the Italian ones

Fun fact. If you visit Greece, many local taverns sell stuffed pies or bread dishes or flat breads with toppings and fillings that could be considered the predecessors of modern pizza, lahmacun and the equivalent of ancient hamburgers.

They're usually in the appetizer section of many traditional taverns, especially in rural areas.

When I visited Pompeii and learned about Roman fast food it blew my mind. Idk why but I just found it fascinating to have such an intimate look into everyday Roman life.

Street food is what they had. It was actual food. Fast food is highly processed. Thats whay we have. It is different.

I always liked the story of how they found the remnants of food here. I love hearing thing that remind me people were not all so serious back then and how somethings have always been the ame, very interesting!!!:)

Recently i cooked libum with a somewhat original recipe (just a thick, dense dough made with flour, eggs and ricotta cooked on a bed of bay leaves and olive oil and topped with honey). Ofc the cheese and flour might be slightly different than those used back then, also i don't have a stone/clay oven but i used a terracotta baking dish and i think it came out good, esp if eaten right out of the oven since it's not a leavened dough and it will harden and become difficult to chew after cooling off. Nevertheless, when i ate it i felt something unexplainable, like being transported back in time; the taste was so simple but it carried so much emotion and connection to my ancestors and territory (i'm italian and live in italy, as far as i know my family is of italian descent but who knows really? Anyway it was a heavily emotional moment for me and it made me think of your videos, i know you understand this feeling❤)

If there is something that my daughter's English highschool teacher used to say when she and my daughter's class came back from visiting Pompeii once, was " We believe we are the inventors, but in reality, we really did not invent anything "
Anyways, thank you for this beautiful video, it's my first time seing your content ! Thank you for visiting my Country and I wish you to have fun and to be safe ❤
