I discovered that sequence when I was first exploring the guitar, some 48 years ago. It led me to write a song that is still in my repertoire after all these years. So, it was magic to finally be told why that sequence works in such a clear and concise way. (I never did get around to much music theory). I will add a link to that song below. It is played here on a Colombian Cuatro a twelve string small bodied guitar with strings bunched into four courses of three strings. Tuned DGBE.

Open D tuning is my favorite open tuning. Throw a capo on the third fret and play with some shapes you can really get some BEAUTIFUL sounds with simple three fret shapes. If anyone is interested I can make a video of a song I wrote in that tuning
