This right here is the perfect example of why opening and ending credits are so important. I vividly remember completely losing my footing when this kicked in after the shock of what had happened minutes ago in the episode.

Especially after the cuteness of the first ending, this ending is an additional punch to the gut after episode 3 and cements that you are not watching what you thought you were watching. It's masterful in every way possible.

I find it sad how Homura is the only one who moves when Madoka walks past

This ed is a metaphorical version of the show itself.
The light Madoka is walking towards is becoming a magical girl. Note that every other character has already been through it (Homura even tries to stop her)
At first, she's walking slowly towards it. She doesn't need to become a magical girl, but she still desires the power that comes with it.
Next, we see her running toward it. Now she feels like she has to make a wish to keep her friends safe.
Then the light fades and reappears behind her. She's no longer running towards it, but away from it. Because she has such incredible potential, the light is now chasing her. But she now knows the horrible fate that awaits her if she becomes a magical girl.
The end shows her asleep in what looks a bit like a Soul Gem. I think this bit represents her true potential lying dormant, waiting to be awakened.

The moment shit got serious. Seriously. Watch this show if you haven't.

Still one of the best twists and shocks in an anime, all wrapped up in one ED.

spoilers:

BTW, Madoka's clothes burning off is not for fanservice reasons. There's an old legend that's mainly from Greek/Roman mythology where a baby is thrown into a fire, burning off its humanity to become a god.

God the symbolism in the last scene with Madoka trapped inside a Faustian mask works on so many levels.

This ending dropping after episode 3 was one the most epic things I saw in anime. The tone switched 180 degree. You knew this won't be stereotypical candy magical shoujo anymore, but seriously dark stuff.

Literally THE best anime in existence. The Evangelion of the magical girl genre

Madoka Magica is absolutely a masterpiece
Shaft doing great job bringing cuteness, thriller, and dark story with their signature animation, cut everywhere they want
Claris and Kalafina really nailed it for their OP and ED, moreover Yuki Kajiura in charge of music composition
Everything was well balanced and dark AF

The one anime outro that's better than the intro

OP: Cute uplifting song about friendship and hope
ED: Mournful, gothic rock with a frightened girl running into an all-consuming void

From my perspective, the scenes where the other characters appears represent her first encounter with magic. The other 3 did not try to stop Madoka from approaching the light (how she views magical girl at first, seeing it as a bright happy life), while only Homura attempted to stop her as she knows the truth of magical girls.

In the scene following Homura, its seen that Madoka is running away from something, at first she's still running towards the light (her view on magical girl in the early part of the story), but then as the anime progress she learned the truth about magical girl, the light slowly die out and turn into darkness.

In the last 2 scenes, u can see Madoka being swallowed up by darkness (her fate to eventually turn into a magical girl), and then disappeared (became a god). Later on you can see Madoka being caged in Homura's eyeball (lets assume its Homura as it would make this more completed), stating that Homura have and is the only one that watched everything that happens to her and her ultimate fate, leaving this memory to noone else but herself
