This. This is how I always imagined the scene. Other animatics went too soft on Ody: This is not a re-encounter, not a happy last goodbye. This is Odysseus, realizing he was too far. Too damn far, and that he took too long. That there's no fixing this, as time keeps going on. And that now the soul of his mother will be longing for his return, forever, incapable of realizing where or what she is now. She's nothing but a collection of her last memories and wishes, trapped in limbo, hoping to see her son one last time, and unable to realize he's in front of her.

Thanks for your depiction of this song. It is one of my favorites, and hopefully you release a full animatic of it :D

The saddest part is that she never received a coin, since Odysseus was so far away. She died completely alone, with no coin under her tongue to pay Charon to cross the river, Styx. She's still waiting on him in death, because she has nowhere else to go.

This is by far one of the best animatics because it enhances the emotional factor by telling stories in those flashbacks. The first one tells you exactly why Odysseus and Polites were best friends, because Polites was the heart to Odysseus' brains. Then the second one tells you so much about Anticlea, who we never properly met beforehand. She's a mother who loves her son so much she waited and waited until her dying breath.

That smash cut to Ody's Mom being pregnant, recontextualizing the "waiting" was violence and I am sobbing so much rn.

She waited while pregnant, nourishing him with her own life. She was there for all his growing, eager to one day see him happily making his own way.

And then she was back to waiting. Waiting. And she still refuses to give up.

The artwork is just so strong, and I love the inclusion of Eurylochus both disappointed and saddened by Odysseus running towards Polites’ spirit right after saying to ignore them in the last song. I imagine if Epic got an official animated version we’d see a lot more of the crew’s reaction to stuff than just Odysseus

His attempt to grab Polites’ hand was heartwrenching, and the entire scene with Odysseus’ mother from pregnancy to getting old/still waiting for her son to return home simply KILLED ME 😭 😭 amazing animatic!!! Everyone’s expressions were so so so well depicted, and that comforting hand on Odysseus’ shoulder, and the gaunt/haggard look to him and Eurolyclus — all the details are amazing!!

Honestly I think this is the best animatic for The Underworld I've seen so far. So many have the spirits interacting with Odysseus in a way that contradicts the lyrics, but you got it. And it makes it so much more of a gut punch, watching them repeat themselves with sightless eyes, unawares but haunting all the same. Beautiful.

ngl, imo, this is the best animatic of this scene in the same vein that rochi's animatic for Monster is quite possibly the best of its lot. You really see on this one that Odysseus is slowly unravelling from the losses of his journey, the crew seeing his slow descent into that fine line between sanity and madness, later addressed in Monster, the song which i like to call "Odysseus' break down song"
