Join for a session focused on cover crops fundamentals, principles and practice. Chris Lawrence, NRCS will provide key cover crop information weaving in opportunities for questions from audience and a live interview/testimonial from Bob Waring, DCR staffer and producer. The final portion of the agenda will include a presentation from David Bryan for a better understanding of VACS cover crop-related BMPs, focusing on the SL-8B practice.

Session objectives include but are not limited to the following Cover crop technical terms, concepts, and principles:
1. What is a cover crop (and why does answer vary so much)?
2. Cover crop purposes & benefits (e.g., N capture, erosion prevention, etc.)
3. Cover crop seasonal niches (e.g., summer vs. winter, etc.)
4. Cover crop functional groups (i.e., grass vs. legume, etc.)
5. Cover crop seeding rates and dates
6. Cover crop establishment principles and methods
7. Cover crop termination principles and methods
8. Cover crop fertilization – ok or not?
9. Cover crop harvest – ok or not?
10. Integrating cover crops into rotations: A reality check
11. Cover crop mixes: Pros & cons
12. Cover crop economics – definite costs, uncertain returns
13. Cover crop performance – options for field evaluation (cover %, biomass lb/ac, etc.)
