She is an ugly person who enjoys breaking everyone around her because she knows she is unlovable unless someone 'has to' (e.g family). She is jealous of her daughters because they are everything she could never be. She is like that partner that feels like you're too good for them so they do everything in their power to make you feel bad about yourself and for everyone around you to lose respect for you.

The first mother is absolutely horrible. She tried to use her husbands death as justification for mistreatment towards her children but they were mistreated their entire lives . It sounds like she was manipulative and verbally abusive towards the husband as well. It’s not just grief she’s feeling ; it’s also guilt, and that’s eating away at her soul furthermore showing her true ignorance and loneliness.
