You are bringing back so many memories!
I grew up in a town called Youngstown Ohio.
Kool and the Gang spent a lot of time here.
As a young guitarist I got to witness pure funk up close because Kool and the Gang, The Ohio Players and many others were local every day people in my town.
All of the major bands of the 70's played and hung out out in Youngstown!
Here's a suggestion.
Go over some guitar work done by a group called New Birth.

I can Understand it and You for Me

Listen to the chord and light over the top riffs.
R&B and Funk players are choppy and very rhythmic in their approach
Even on slow tunes.
Take a listen.

There is a funky rhythm part is a song by Jimmy Page called "Taken a Hold on me" on the recently released Yardbirds' 68 of unreleased and live tracks. Could you show us that song?

No disrespect, I've been tormented about that second chord. I don't think you're right about it. When you watch them live on Soul Train, it looks like he's actually going DOWN 2 frets for a Gm7/9... played XX5435, barring the4 top strings on the 3rd fret. And note that the bass player is playing a G on that chord. It's so much easier to play!
