DQ8 is one of my all time favourite games and have just finished replaying it whilst waiting for this; I AM SO FUCKING HYPED FOR THIS!!!

DQ8 is one of my favorite games ever, and certainly my favorite RPG ever. Over the years I've gradually moved away from consoles and I'm now a PC only player. I'm SO excited to see this game come to PC!

I would actually disagree with you strongly about FF versus DQ in terms of how much effort SE puts into localization. DQ definitely gets a LOT more emphasis on more stylized localization projects, with a LOT more work done per game than any FF by a rather substantial margin.

For instance, accents and locals. FF's always use the same accents and style for every single character. Everyone sounds the same, it's merely a distinction of wealthy versus poor, or educated versus uneducated. However DQ's go several steps further by creating unique accents for each and every area, and even between characters in the party, whether we know they're from distinct areas or not, or their history would lend them to develop a different accent from their place of origin (like Milly in DQ6 having a unique accent from Gandino, which has an Italian flavour...while Milly has a more Americanized flavour from worldly travel).

You walk into one town, and you have Scottsmen. Another, and it's like Fleet Street in London. Another is like New York City, another is like Germany, and another like Russian, and so on and so forth.

The only exception in the FF universe is Woolsey's work, but Woolsey did something unique in that he added extra flavour to certain characters. Made them more silly, or more nuanced, or granted them more depth, or more caring, or even more of a diabolical nature (Kefka definitely comes to mind both as more silly and as more sadistic in his FF3 SNES rendition, to the point where future Japanese releases even utilize elements of Woolsey's characterizations above and beyond the original work). Even then, 90% of the work he did that drastically altered context, was FF6...literally just that game. The other 10% is spread out with catch phrases here and there in his other work, like FF4's, "Spoony Bard, " line. However this is different, as it's not world building, but character building, and more simplistic in many respects than the extreme changes done to DQ's storylines to rework most of the Japanese inside jokes and colloquial sayings and concepts (which DQ is rife with on a level FAR exceeding FF games...far exceeding most JRPG's), so they work with Western audiences.

There's also a TON of extra work done on every enemy, every spell, every item, and every piece of equipment in a DQ game, something unique to DQ. FF games have little nuance in their naming schema. Everything is kept clean, uniform, and most everything uses very straight forward names that are often direct translations. DQ's tend to change a lot to alliteration or puns, or a combination of both. Even the renaming of characters is taken FAR more seriously in DQ's than in FF's. FF game renaming often includes no research into the characters and how they fit the names, while every DQ localized name that is different uses indepth research into the characters themselves. For instance, Ashlynn implies one who is an offering, or one who has been reborn through trial of fire, and one other meaning, all of which tie directly to her history and her personal storyline as DQ6 progresses.

The main reason for this that Yuji Horii himself is directly involved in the process, and both he and SE have decided it best to enhance the lighthearted aspects of DQ, and give it a VERY unique personality and flavour.

Now, if you want to say that Square-Enix puts less emphasis and less risk into how they market Dragon Quest versus Final Fantasy, and that, until recently, they have shown a reluctance to even talk about Dragon Quest and instead of speaking in positive and upbeat mannerisms, they seem shy and downplay the series. That has changed since the demand for Dragon Quest VII became huge and that triggered FF and KH fans to demand we DQ fans get some love (well I am a fan of all three =p, but I guess it makes more sense to represent this from me being a DQ fan).

If you want to say that even with DQ11's current pushes, that SE is still risk averse in that they're not running hard commercials at this point, nearly 2 months away from release. Or that SE decided not to acknowledge success of DQ9, or why DQ's 4, 5, and 6 were lackluster (still good sales for most companies), or even DQ's 7 and 8, but rather DQ8, Heroes, and Builders is another issue and a thorn for quite a few DQ fans I've spoken to. Given how disingenuous it is. Much like when DQ Heroes was announced and showcased at an e3 several years back, SE pretended that THAT game was the game fans have been demanding, when it was really DQ7. That SE does play games with words.

That when DQ11 was first to be announced, SE had a banner with a slime for both their general and DQ twitter and facebook pages back in October of '17. Right on time after Horii's statement. They removed both a few days later when I guess something happened internally and SE decided to postpone the announcement until March 28th of this year. Likely to cancel the 3DS, refocus on the Switch, and create another false narrative about the Switch development.

We do know that SE started Switch development the moment the PS4 and 3DS went green, for those last bits of beta testing, fixes, and especially time to print enough copies to satiate the Japanese public. So about February/March of '17. Given SE was directly involved in DQ1+2 and Builders on the Switch, and both games were ported over in roughly 7~9 months time from the point where they were officially being worked on (at least when SE put it out there) to release point, it stands that the Switch's second schedule, after they had to postpone development, would have put it up for release anywhere from December to March, but likely due to prints, and extra checking and sheer size...maybe March of this year was more likely. So my guess is they decided to tweak the Switch release, probably because both the 3DS and PS4 combined were in the low-ball tier of SE's projections. So they really need the Switch to rake in the numbers in Japan...but now also in the US and EU. They ARE giving up an installment base that is right now still over 4x what the Switch is, in the US and EU, and is more likely to purchase DQ11 3DS than 7 and 8 due to a normal campaign, and due to being a "new" DQ as per how it would be advertised...and due to the retro style of the 2D mode, and the easy sell of extra (and good) content.

I will leave with this. We DO know the baseline of the Switch is the PS4 version. Horii leaked that himself like 9 months ago in Japan. However, I do get a feeling we might see some of the 3DS content on top of unique elements. The 2D alone would fit on less than 20MB of space, and any VA work would draw from the same files (I suspect Japan will get VA work for the Switch version). The 3DS extra content, if they decide to use it in some capacity, would make bank for them, both as they can GREATLY utilize it for extra expanded content that further connects DQ11 to the other games in the series, but it would also add the extra dimension for Japanese players of further enhancing an already well liked extra element, and for US audiences, it would mean we get the 3DS content. Nevermind the draw of adding in 2D (all items are the same in each area, save a few, and those can easily be tweaked in the 2D, nevermind the ease of porting it to UE4).

That's just my feeling, but we do know for sure that the PS4 is the baseline for the Switch. We can also definitely say that SE is playing word games to intentionally downplay the Switch by pretending they only just started work (but reading the actual context of what they're saying suggests they're only trying to give that impression...and any research into the actual official switch announcement shows it's been worked on since Feb the earliest, March '17 the latest starting point). So if anything, they want to assure maximum PS4/PC sales, and then really shock and awe when they decide to reveal the Switch, which I think they'll wait until a month after the PS4 is released. They'll just play more word games, and maybe let it be known that the Switch will have some extra content, and substantiate the rumour, as...that would be one hell of a waste of time, personnel, and money to spend 2 bloody years on a basic port with a few extra bits. Just enough to satiate but keep them salivating, and keep us, and everyone else assuming the Switch is just a basic port of the PS4.
