The Ugly Truth About Chamath Palihapitiya

Chamath Palihapitiya likes to frame himself as the billionaire of the people, but in reality, he’s just another Wall Street suit who manipulates retail investors to make more profits for himself. For example, he advocated for everyone to never sell their Tesla stock as he was selling off his entire stake himself. Similarly, he bought calls during the Gamestop runup, encouraging unsafe investing for millions of investors. But, these are by far his smallest offenses. Likely the biggest red flag is that Chamath is the king of SPACs otherwise known as the king of scams. SPACs are essentially shell companies that allow small private companies that aren’t ready to go public by themselves to go public. Theoretically, this should give retail investors access to private investments faster and make larger profits. But, the reality is that most of these SPACs get destroyed on the market after the initial hype leading to most investors losing well over 90% of their investment. This video explains the dark side of Chamath Palihapitiya and why you should be wary of following any of his advice.

As a rule of thumb, the more a person goes public with how good and great he is, the more rotten he is.

Finally, someone's speaking the truth. This isn't hate (I'd change the title of the video) but exposing a public figure for who he truly is so people can protect themselves against his "advice".

First time I saw Palihapitiya, I thought: "That's a big time scammer right there!" Glad to know I am not alone in that.

Chamath Palihapitiya is seriously the epitome of a man with no emotions but can understand and portray them. They should make a movie of him, a sequel to that movie and call it American Psycho 2: No killing, just shilling. And get Van Damme in it to SPAC his face.

Thanks for this video brother! I have known this ever since he dumped his GME shares while simultenously promoting it in the media. Glad to see you're adressing this issue and showing it to your many subscribers.

Chamath seems like a very seedy guy with ulterior motives. Just hearing him speak sets off American Psycho vibes.

I came here to learn how to trade after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460, 000 in 4 months from $160k. Somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm confused about the current market volatility, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.

First of all, great video as usual, thanks for backing up all your claims with facts, it really shows the effort you put in! I agree with most of it, except for the statement on Uyghurs, Chamath point in the podcast was that everyone was basically virtue signaling about caring for this genocide, but at the same time they were still buying Chinese products en mass be it iPhones, Nike Shoes, etc were many of them were manufactured by these same people. So I think his point was more pointing towards the hypocrisy of people in the media and his podcast host. I also think that you were a bit overly critical of his character. Now as you pointed out he does give some dubious advice especially when appearing on mainstream media outlets, however, some of the advice he gives is really good and provides very good insight, especially on his podcast the All-In pod. I don’t think he is as evil or calculating as you portray in the video, but more of a guy who likes attention and has outsized influence (a bit like Musk’s antics on Twitter with dogecoin). In the end, I think like all individuals, people should always take any advice from him with a grain of salt, and discern the good from the bad.

He openly admits that the world is ruled by 300 men and the way to get inside is to do what they do so well that you get accepted.

I was a fan of Chamath for a long time. Now I can't stand him. He's really just a charismatic guy that sounds good on youtube. But now his stuff just feels off. Thanks for articulating what so many of us were thinking.

This is a great video Hari, keep up the good work man. Seeing your channel grow is honestly really inspiring.

As I've grown older I have also begun to notice the problem with idolizing these billionaires, politicians, and celebrities... observing people like Chamath and Sam Bankman Fried (proclaimed "billionaires of the people") exposes the harsh reality that these many of these famous/rich people only care about themselves (despite their extensive efforts to prove otherwise). I think you could honestly do the world a favor by making a series of videos like this.

I'm actually proud I never fell for his lines. I saw a bunch of videos with him saying all the things I agree with but there was always something disingenuous about him. Now I know that my instincts were right.

Nice work. Everyone needs to learn to stop listening to what other people say, and start watching what they do

This video makes me sad. I wanted to believe in Chamath Palihapitya, and not just because he's Canadian. I want to believe that there was more than just Cathie Wood out there... playing the Wall Street Game, but trying to play it _for_ us, rather than _against_ us.

Also, Hari, I would urge you to keep the following in the back of your mind: everybody loved your last video, myself included, because bad actors _should_ be called out, it's kinda a breath of fresh air when someone steps up and actually does it. I honestly had no idea about SkillShare. I would never have guessed those details, and it struck me a a fine bit of investigative reporting.

But there is a danger in framing everything in the most negative light possible, assuming bad faith, and blasting all kinds of people many of whom should get blasted. It's easy to get cynical, and start seeing the entire world as nothing but scams and con artists, especially when you get that positive reinforcement of elevated social media metrics (and in youtube's case, actual money.) Just because the public wants red meat all the time, does not mean it's good for them.

For example, there is a very easy case to make against Elon Musk right now, as he seems to be getting shittier and shittier as a person in a few key ways. Does that mean that Tesla is a scam, and nothing but a greenwash cash grab from someone who talks a great game about Climate Change but only cares about money? Or is Tesla still the sustainable energy mission and fantastically asymmetric stock bet it always has been, just headed by an asshole? See, you can make anything a bitter disappointment if you try hard enough, even Tesla.

One of the things I have enjoyed about your channel is that I can tell that you are fundamentally an optimist. You want things to be OK. In this series you are recognizing that they often are not. I think on balance, that's a good thing. But it might be a good idea to intersperse these takedowns of Scummy People and Scummy Organizations, with stories that make you feel better... signs of hope.

Also, a thought experiment technique I hear get used that you may want to try, (ironically enough one that gets used a lot by Chamath and the boys on The All-In Podcast) is to "steelman" any position you disagree with. It's easy to be cynical and assume bad faith, and I think people like us do that by default. So as a mental exercise, put the cynical take to one side for a minute, and try to assume they are acting in good faith, and paint their argument in the strongest possible terms, just so in your head you have a balance of what the possibilities are; a Worst Case _and_ a Best Case.

(And of course, if even after steelmanning the other side's argument it's still garbage, then you know you are not just being cynical, you are right, the thing objectively sucks)
