Please follow your owner manual and consult a marine mechanic with any concerns you have.

You can most likely use this tutorial as a guide for other outboards as well. Such as Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, Evinrude, Tohatsu and others.

First off let me say thank you for watching my videos.
If you feel that this video or any of my videos has helped you then please feel free to donate what you see fit and please do not feel obligated to do this. It is greatly appreciated and goes to further more help producing more of these. I am not a "for hire" marine mechanic and I do not make a living at working on boats, tackle or marine engines. I am a charter fishing guide and small business owner who chooses to work on things myself in my line of work and in return try to share some of the things I have learned, with you the viewer. I do these tutorials to help you, the viewer, save some money and time (it has saved me a ton of both) by doing the work yourself. However making these video tutorials takes a massive amount of time (instead of just doing the work without recording it and then uploading them), post editing, research and time away from my job as a fishing guide, which I do full time. I want to say thank you very much and again thanks for watching.

A typical marine mechanic usually makes between $70 and $95 an hour. Plus the time it takes for them to have the engine/boat in their possession to even get to the work. Think of the money and time you can save by doing some things yourself. It adds up fast over the years.

I also want to stress very clearly that I have nothing against them, at some point in time I too need their expertise and services. I appreciate the depth and knowledge they have. However just like the "big" home improvement stores and "do it your self'" places that are not going after the handymen and builders, we all like to expand our knowledge and have a sense of accomplishment. So please do not take any offense to these videos.

Drew, I have a 2017 F40 Yamaha 4 stroke with 20 hours on the motor (yes, 3 years!), so I don't get quite the use of mine that you do! I did all this maintenance once with Yamaha parts. I still found your video very helpful and well done! Big difference between Florida and The Great White North, plus pleasure versus your professional use.

Thanks Drew,
I bought a 2006 model and didn't know a thing. I brought it to Guyana South America. I couldn't find a mechanic that knows about the 4 stroke stuff. I looked at your video and I did everything myself. I found the video very helpful. job keep up the good work.

Really great work with the Yamaha F50 video's Drew, i completed all the servicing today and water pump, and thermostat. Everything is exactly like your video's in my 2010 model.

Only tiny issue i faced is i couldnt find an 18mm spark plug spanner, so i bought a long 18mm socket but then it was too fat to fit in the recessed part of the engine block. So i grinded the outside wall of the socket down skinnier, and now it fits great.

I can't thank you enough for your video's Drew, all the best!

P.S. If you ever do a video on the power trim & tilt i'm sure many people will love it. The Yamaha pump i bought for the lower gear oil has an extra fitting for the trim fluid but i can't see where it goes yet.

Capt, great videos! I am a first time boat owner and am very particular how my boat is cared for. You have gave me knowledge and kept money in my pocket. When I make it down to Florida, I will have to schedule a guided trip.

She runs like a champ. I have had Yamaha techs tell me they can not even tell it has any, I do the maintenance every 90 days regardless.

I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Just bought a new to me boat with a Yamaha F50 TLR so I'm trying to learn all I can about it. Your video was very helpful. Thank you!

Drew, undo the bottom case screw first with the oil drain pan underneath. Then undo the top one. You will get very little oil leaking from the bottom screw until you release the top screw.

Thanks! Glad it worked for you. It is really not that hard after you get it done. Also a feeling of accomplishment.

Some comments that I thing might be useful!
1. When you are changing the fuel filter, make sure you drain the gas from the filter housing. often water and other crap collets there.
2. Make sure that you also change the fuel strainer that is situated after the fuel pump covered by a rubber hose. When it gets clogged up, your engine starts playing up.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for this excellent video. I have a 2009 Yamaha F60TLRH on my 20' pontoon boat. It runs superbly but has one very annoying problem that I have been unable to correct.

When cold the engine never starts on the first turn of the key which I can live with but don't like especially when my neighbour's engines always start on the first turn of the key.

When it does start it goes into a fast idle mode which is not acceptable. The only way I can cure this is to turn off the engine and refire the ignition. In almost every case this cures the problem but that still shouldn't have to be done. I have replaced the Idle Air Control Valve but unfortunately that did not cure the problem.

What else could be causing this problem?
