In the next installment of our series looking at the Puerto Rico Islanders best CONCACAF Champions League moments - we revisit the night the Islanders stole a late victory against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
Already a landmark occasion for the Islanders - with it being the first CONCACAF game on Puerto Rican soil, El Tropa Naranja, took the opportunity to make it a memorable evening for everyone connected with the club.
Tied 1-1 from the first leg in Costa Rica - a game the local newspapers had predicted would finish 8-0 to the home side, Alajuelense took an early lead through midfielder Ariel Rodríguez. That lead would hold until the 87th minute when Kendall Jagdeosingh drew the sides level both on the night and on aggregate.
With the game heading to extra-time, a Johnny Steele freekick was lofted high up into the Bayamón night sky, and after being flicked on by an Alajuelense defender, it feel to Taiwo Atieno, who calmly chested it before slotting it past the goalkeeper - causing an explosion of atmosphere in the stands.
